Key Terms

biosimilar, 351(k), cmc
3 terms
biosimilar medical
"advancing ABP-450 as a biosimilar to BOTOX"
A biosimilar is a medicine created to be highly similar to an existing complex drug made from living cells, matching its safety and effectiveness while allowing for small, natural variations. For investors, biosimilars matter because they introduce lower-cost competition when patents end, which can cut prices, shift market share, and change revenue forecasts for companies selling the original drugs, much like a generic version does for simpler chemical medicines.
351(k) regulatory
"advances ABP-450 under the 351(k) biosimilar pathway"
351(k) is the U.S. regulatory pathway for seeking approval of a biosimilar or interchangeable biological product by relying on an existing licensed biologic’s safety and effectiveness data instead of repeating all original trials. For investors, a 351(k) approval usually means faster, less costly market entry and increased competition for an established product’s sales, similar to a new brand launching a lower-cost version of a popular recipe with the original cook’s blessing.
cmc technical
"work closely with AEON’s analytical, CMC and clinical teams"
Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) describes the technical documentation and processes that show how a drug or medical product is made, tested for consistent quality, and kept stable from batch to batch. Investors care because strong CMC means a product can be manufactured reliably at scale and meet regulatory standards—similar to proving a recipe can be cooked the same way in any kitchen before restaurants expand—affecting approval, production costs, and potential revenue.

Dr. Lee also recently co-authored a publication describing the FDA review and approval of Tyruko® (natalizumab-sztn), the first FDA-approved biosimilar to natalizumab. Before joining the FDA, Dr. Lee was a staff clinician at the National Human Genome Research Institute, where he served as an investigator in rare-disease clinical trials and as a reviewing physician for the Undiagnosed Diseases Network. Dr. Lee earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Maryland and is board certified in neurology with special qualification in child neurology.

Dr. Lee said, “I am pleased to take on this expanded role and work even more closely with the AEON team to advance a scientifically rigorous biosimilar development program. I look forward to bringing my regulatory, neuroscience and biosimilar experience to that work.”

About the U.S. Biosimilar Pathway

The 351(k) biosimilar pathway is grounded in a totality-of-the-evidence approach, with comparative analytical assessment providing the scientific foundation for establishing biosimilarity. The nature and extent of additional studies are informed by the totality of the evidence and any residual uncertainty remaining following comparative analytical assessment. Once biosimilarity is established, FDA may approve a biosimilar for additional indications of the reference product through scientifically justified extrapolation, without requiring separate clinical studies in each indication.
