The integration of Akoustis Technologies' next-generation XBAW® filters into a major US-based carrier's Wi-Fi 7 router platform marks a significant development in the wireless technology sector. This move signals an increasing adoption of Wi-Fi 7, which is set to offer considerably higher data rates compared to its predecessor, Wi-Fi 6E. The reported data rate enhancement to approximately 46 Gbps could potentially meet the burgeoning demand for high-speed internet in residential spaces, driven by trends such as remote work, online gaming and high-definition streaming.

For stakeholders, the secured orders for a production ramp-up in the September quarter of 2024 indicate a clear revenue stream for Akoustis in the near future. This could potentially improve the company's financial performance and attractiveness to investors. However, it's crucial to monitor the execution of the production ramp-up and subsequent market adoption to assess the long-term impact on the company's bottom line.

The technical specifications of Akoustis' filters, such as the 5.5 GHz and 6.5 GHz coexistence filters, are critical for the performance of Wi-Fi 7 routers, particularly in environments with multiple overlapping frequency bands. The filters' ability to facilitate coexistence with U-NII 5 thru 8 and U-NII 1 thru 3, respectively and their compact packaging, are essential for minimizing interference and latency in high-density wireless applications. This could give Akoustis a competitive edge in the market, as efficient spectrum utilization becomes increasingly important with the proliferation of wireless devices.

Furthermore, the mention of reduced latency is particularly relevant for applications requiring real-time communication, such as gaming or video conferencing. The compact size of the filters also suggests that they could be easily integrated into a range of devices without significantly impacting form factor, which is an important consideration for manufacturers.

The announcement by Akoustis Technologies is likely to have a positive impact on its stock market performance, considering the importance of strategic partnerships in the tech industry. The collaboration with a leading carrier, which caters to over 32 million residential customers, represents a substantial market opportunity. Investors will be interested in the company's ability to scale production and maintain the quality of its high-band RF filters to meet the demands of the Wi-Fi 7 market.

It is important to evaluate the company's current valuation and how this news might be already priced into the stock. The anticipation of increased revenue from this deal could lead to an upward revision of the company's earnings forecasts. However, investors should also be aware of the risks associated with production scalability and potential market competition, which could affect the company's future financial health.

  • Secures Wi-Fi 7 Filter Orders to Support Production Ramp in September Quarter of Calendar Year 2024

Charlotte, N.C., Feb. 12, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Akoustis Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKTS) (“Akoustis” or the “Company”), an integrated device manufacturer (IDM) of patented bulk acoustic wave (BAW) high-band RF filters for mobile and other wireless applications, announced today that two of its patented XBAW® filters are being integrated into a Wi-Fi 7 router platform with a leading US-based carrier, catering to more than 32 million residential customers.

These next-generation Wi-Fi 7 coexistence filters are designed into the customer’s 4x4 Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) Wi-Fi 7 AP router platform. Akoustis’ 5.5 GHz filter facilitates coexistence with U-NII 5 thru 8, while the 6.5 GHz filter addresses coexistence with U-NII 1 thru 3. Both filters come in a compact 1.6 x 1.8 mm package and support architectures offering reduced latency, particularly advantageous for small carrier routers. In addition, they support enhanced Wi-Fi 7 data rates up to ~46 Gbps, which is approximately five times more than the maximum data rate of Wi-Fi 6E. The Company has already secured substantial orders from the customer, supporting a production ramp-up scheduled for the September quarter of calendar year 2024.

Jeff Shealy, founder and CEO of Akoustis, commented, “Receiving this design win signifies another completed milestone and reflects our prominent standing in the Wi-Fi market.” Mr. Shealy continued, “The incorporation of Akoustis’ Wi-Fi 7 coexistence filters into the carrier’s 4x4 MIMO Wi-FI AP router platform demonstrates our advancements in technology and delivering superior performance for small carrier routers.”

Akoustis maintains its momentum with robust demand and an expanding sales pipeline for its XBAW® filter products, in addition to its new XBAW®/SAW resonator and oscillator products, and semiconductor back-end services. The Company continues to secure new design wins in its target markets including Wi-Fi, 5G Infrastructure, Automotive and Defense, many of which are slated to ramp into production in the coming months.

About Akoustis Technologies, Inc.

Akoustis® (http://www.akoustis.com/) is a high-tech BAW RF filter solutions company that is pioneering next-generation materials science and MEMS wafer manufacturing to address the market requirements for improved RF filters — targeting higher bandwidth, higher operating frequencies and higher output power compared to legacy polycrystalline BAW technology. The Company utilizes its proprietary and patented XBAW® manufacturing process to produce bulk acoustic wave RF filters for mobile and other wireless markets, which facilitate signal acquisition and accelerate band performance between the antenna and digital back end. Superior performance is driven by the significant advances of poly-crystal, single-crystal, and other high purity piezoelectric materials and the resonator-filter process technology which enables optimal trade-offs between critical power, frequency and bandwidth performance specifications.

Akoustis plans to service the fast growing multi-billion-dollar RF filter market using its integrated device manufacturer (IDM) business model. The Company owns and operates a 125,000 sq. ft. ISO-9001:2015 registered commercial wafer-manufacturing facility located in Canandaigua, NY, which includes a class 100 / class 1000 cleanroom facility — tooled for 150-mm diameter wafers — for the design, development, fabrication and packaging of RF filters, MEMS and other semiconductor devices. Akoustis Technologies, Inc. is headquartered in the Piedmont technology corridor near Charlotte, North Carolina.
