Astera Labs (ALAB) unveiled Orion, a modular rack-scale reference architecture designed to let AI inference customers choose their GPUs and CPUs.
The company expects reference designs to become available through OEM and ODM partners beginning in Q1 2027. Orion includes six reference designs spanning racks, trays and boards, integrated with COSMOS management software. Its PCIe fabric is designed to scale from 8 to 160 GPUs per pod. The rack-level setup combines Astera Labs’ Scorpio Smart Fabric Switch, Lumentum’s 1060 nm VCSEL optical platform, which uses vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, and Corning multimode fiber connectivity. The proof-of-concept system is designed to demonstrate multiple 32 Gb/s optical channels and an error-free PCIe-5 link, extending the computer interconnect over optical fiber within an AI rack.

Leo X-Series, used with Scorpio X-Series fabric switches, enables direct fabric-attached memory for KV-cache-intensive AI workloads, with up to 62% faster time to first token and up to 22% more tokens per second versus CPU- or NVMe-based architectures.[1] The enhanced Leo 2 E- and P-Series double memory bandwidth and capacity versus the previous generation, support DDR4 and DDR5, PCIe 6 host links, and CXL 3.2, and are designed to reuse existing DDR4 DIMMs in new cloud servers. The family is sampling with hyperscaler customers and was developed with ecosystem partners including AMD, Arm, Intel, and major memory suppliers.
