Key Terms

satellite communications technical
Satellite communications are signals—voice, data or video—sent from ground stations to orbiting satellites and then relayed back to other ground stations or devices, acting like relay stations in the sky that connect distant places. Investors care because these systems enable global connectivity for phones, internet, broadcasting and military uses; they involve large upfront costs, long-term contracts and technological or regulatory risks, so changes in demand, launch costs or spectrum rules can materially affect a company’s revenues and valuation.
systems engineering technical
Systems engineering is the disciplined process of designing, integrating, and managing complex products or services so all parts work together reliably over their lifetime. Think of it as the project’s conductor and blueprint combined: it coordinates teams, components, schedules, and testing to reduce surprises, meet regulations, and control costs. For investors, strong systems engineering lowers the risk of delays, costly fixes, safety failures, or missed revenue from products that don’t perform as promised.
network engineering technical
Network engineering is the design, installation, and maintenance of the systems that let computers and devices talk to each other—like planning reliable roads, bridges and traffic signals for digital data. Investors care because a company’s network affects how well it serves customers, protects sensitive information, scales operations, and controls costs; weak or costly networks can cause outages, breaches or higher expenses that hurt revenue and valuation.
lifecycle sustainment management technical
Lifecycle sustainment management is the ongoing planning and work that keeps a product, system, or service working and up-to-date from the moment it’s launched until it’s retired. For investors it matters because it affects long-term costs, revenue from maintenance or upgrades, supply-chain risks and customer satisfaction—think of it like budgeting and scheduling regular tune-ups and part replacements to avoid costly breakdowns later.
