Diebold Nixdorf (NYSE: DBD) announced that EDEKA Paschmann in Düsseldorf has become the first German retailer to implement its AI-powered Vynamic® Smart Vision | Shrink Reduction solution at self-service checkouts. The technology uses cameras to detect and address checkout errors in real-time, helping reduce shrinkage at self-checkout stations.

The implementation includes two key AI solutions: the shrink reduction system that monitors for missed scans and incorrect operations, and an automated age verification system for purchasing restricted items. Both solutions are GDPR-compliant and operate without facial recognition or storing customer information. EDEKA Paschmann plans to further expand its AI capabilities with Vynamic® Smart Vision | Fresh Produce Recognition in the future.

Insights

Diebold Nixdorf's AI self-checkout solutions target retail shrink and improve efficiency, potentially boosting recurring revenue and competitive positioning.

Diebold Nixdorf's deployment of their AI-powered shrink reduction and age verification technologies at EDEKA Paschmann marks a significant milestone in the German market. The implementation addresses two critical pain points in retail: checkout shrinkage and age verification friction.

The Vynamic Smart Vision I Shrink Reduction solution employs real-time video analysis to detect missed scans and checkout errors - attacking the most common source of retail shrink at self-checkout stations. By providing customers with immediate feedback and allowing self-correction, the system maintains a positive shopping experience while reducing losses. This approach avoids unnecessary staff interventions that can create customer friction and embarrassment.

Complementing this, the Smart Vision I Age Verification system automates a traditionally staff-dependent process, allowing employees to focus on higher-value activities. This addresses a key operational bottleneck in self-checkout adoption.

The announcement signals Diebold Nixdorf's strategic positioning in the expanding self-checkout market, with technology that solves genuine retail problems while complying with privacy regulations (GDPR). The mention of EDEKA Paschmann's plans to implement the Fresh Produce Recognition solution indicates potential for expanded recurring revenue through multiple AI modules.

By focusing on loss prevention through customer assistance rather than confrontation, Diebold Nixdorf has created technology that improves both the retailer's bottom line and the customer experience - a challenging balance in retail technology. This German market entry could serve as a reference point for broader European expansion of these AI solutions.

Technology provides important assistance so customers can accurately and conveniently process transactions

NORTH CANTON, Ohio, Aug. 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- EDEKA Paschmann in Düsseldorf is the first supermarket in Germany to use Diebold Nixdorf's (NYSE: DBD) Vynamic® Smart Vision I Shrink Reduction solution at its self-service checkouts. The AI-enabled technology addresses errors at the self-service checkout – both unintentional and deliberate – and offers retailers protection against the most common cause of loss in self-checkout. In addition, the systems are equipped with Diebold Nixdorf's automatic, AI-powered age verification. Both solutions help EDEKA Paschmann reduce friction for shoppers and store staff alike, tackling the areas that cause the majority of interventions and checkout delays.

Vynamic Smart Vision I Shrink Reduction uses cameras to analyze customer behavior and activities at the self-service checkout in real time. If the system detects a missed scan or incorrect operation, customers receive a nudge via a message on the checkout display informing that an item has not been scanned correctly. Once the shopper self-rectifies and scans the product which was missed, the transaction continues without major interruption to the checkout process. Employees are only informed if the system displays another error message, so they can provide support to complete the checkout process correctly. Short, real-time video sequences of the anomaly detected by the system help to better illustrate the process to customers and explain how certain operating errors can be avoided in future.

With Vynamic® Smart Vision I Age Verification, EDEKA Paschmann is deploying another AI-enabled solution from Diebold Nixdorf. By using a consumer-facing camera and a sophisticated algorithm, shoppers can authorize the purchase of age-restricted goods like alcoholic beverages. This gives staff members time for more important tasks such as customer service or ensuring product availability, as they only need to assist shoppers who score below the age threshold or those who do not wish to opt in.

Both solutions do not involve facial recognition or the storage of images or other customer information, making them fully GDPR-compliant.

Falk Paschmann, managing director of EDEKA Paschmann, said: "The well-being of our customers is a high priority. We want to make the shopping experience as appealing as possible for them with state-of-the-art store technology. This also applies to the payment process. With Diebold Nixdorf's Smart Vision technology, we are making the self-service area even more attractive, as we give our customers the assurance that all transactions are carried out correctly and, in the case of age-restricted goods, more quickly."

Leyla Feghhi, head of Retail Sales in the DACH region at Diebold Nixdorf, said: "We are delighted to see Vynamic Smart Vision I Shrink Reduction in use for the first time in Germany at EDEKA Paschmann. With this AI-powered solution, we already cover more than 20 of the most common causes of shrink. At the same time, the technology enables employees to better assess situations so they can respond appropriately. This prevents customers from being suspected of theft every time they accidentally scan an item incorrectly, and staff from having to engage in difficult personal interventions."

In the future, EDEKA Paschmann also plans to use Vynamic® Smart Vision | Fresh Produce Recognition, Diebold Nixdorf's AI-powered solution for automatic recognition of fruit and vegetables.
