Insights

FOXO's hospital adding wound care services targets growing diabetic patient needs, potentially boosting revenue in underserved rural market.

FOXO Technologies is making a strategic service expansion at its Big South Fork Medical Center in rural Tennessee with the addition of wound care services starting June 2, 2025. This development addresses a significant market need, particularly for diabetic patients who frequently require specialized wound treatment. According to CDC data cited in the release, the U.S. has over 38 million diabetes patients, with up to 15% experiencing diabetic foot ulcers.

The timing of this expansion appears well-calculated. The hospital already serves a substantial patient base with 600+ monthly ER visits and approximately 300 monthly outpatient visits. By adding wound care capabilities that can serve both inpatient and outpatient populations, the facility is leveraging its existing infrastructure while expanding its billable service offerings. This approach typically allows for improved operational efficiency through higher utilization of fixed costs.

Rural healthcare facilities face unique challenges but also enjoy reduced competition. As a critical access hospital, Big South Fork likely benefits from enhanced Medicare reimbursement rates (typically cost-plus-1%), making service expansion financially advantageous. The focus on diabetic wound care is particularly shrewd given the higher prevalence of diabetes in rural areas and the chronic, recurring nature of these treatments which creates a steady revenue stream.

The reference to "further expand our footprint in East Tennessee" suggests this may be the first step in a broader regional growth strategy, potentially indicating future acquisitions or additional service line expansions in the area. Rural healthcare consolidation continues to be a significant trend as smaller facilities seek economies of scale.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, May 19, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FOXO Technologies Inc. (NYSE American: FOXO) (“FOXO” or the “Company”) today announced that its critical access hospital, Big South Fork Medical Center in Oneida, Tennessee, is expanding its services by offering wound care services to patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The hospital intends to commence such services on June 2, 2025, and expects to complete the reconfiguration of certain space at the hospital and addition of key clinical hires to facilitate this expected start date.

The hospital has experienced a growing need for wound care services particularly for diabetic patients who have wounds often characterized by excessive inflammation and reduced angiogenesis and have a higher risk for postoperative wound healing complications. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2021 there were over 38 million diabetes patients in the U.S. with up to 15% of them experiencing diabetic foot ulcers.

Hal Leftwich, Chief Executive Officer of Big South Fork Medical Center stated, “We are excited about expanding our service offerings to patients in our communities. Wound care is a vital new service that we will offer to patients as we broaden our overall service offerings. This new service will build on our rural hospital that cares for over 600 patients in the emergency room and approximately 300 patients on an outpatient basis monthly.” Seamus Lagan, Chief Executive Officer of parent company, FOXO Technologies Inc., further added, “we are pleased that our rural hospital is expanding its services that will, in turn, increase revenues and are working closely with hospital management to consider options available to us to further expand our footprint in East Tennessee.”
