5g technical
5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology that provides faster internet connections, lower latency, and greater capacity than previous networks. It enables quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and more reliable connections for devices. For investors, 5G represents a significant upgrade in technology infrastructure that can drive growth in related industries such as smartphones, smart cities, and the Internet of Things.
4g technical
4G is the fourth generation of cellular network technology that delivers faster internet, clearer calls, and better support for video and apps on mobile devices. Investors care because upgrades or expansions of 4G networks affect sales of phones and network equipment, change how consumers use data, and influence revenue and costs for telecom firms—think of it as a highway upgrade that lets more traffic flow faster, benefiting companies that build, run, or sell services on that road.
chipsets technical
Chipsets are groups of electronic circuits on a computer board or inside a device that coordinate how the processor, memory, sensors and other parts work together—think of them as the device’s traffic controller or the transmission in a car that links engine to wheels. They matter to investors because chipset design and availability influence product performance, cost, power use, compatibility and supply-chain risk, which in turn affect sales, profit margins and a company’s competitive position.
user equipment technical
User equipment is the physical devices people or machines use to connect to a communications network—examples include smartphones, tablets, home routers, cellular modems and IoT sensors. For investors, these devices are the visible end of a technology ecosystem: their adoption, pricing and upgrade cycles drive sales, service revenue and network investment, much like how the number of cars on the road affects demand for fuel, repairs and road maintenance.
non-terrestrial connectivity technical
Non-terrestrial connectivity is communications delivered from platforms above or beyond the Earth—such as satellites, high-altitude balloons or aircraft—rather than solely from ground-based towers and cables. For investors, it’s like building extra roads and bridges to reach remote towns: it expands addressable markets and improves network resilience, but typically involves high upfront costs, regulatory approvals and long development timelines that shape risk and return.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- GCT Semiconductor Holding Inc. (“GCT” or the "Company") (NYSE: GCTS), a leading designer and supplier of advanced 5G and 4G semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has licensed its 5G and 4G chipsets to one of the world’s largest satellite communications providers. The agreement enables the integration of GCT’s 5G and 4G chipsets into the satellite provider’s user equipment, unlocking new capabilities for global, resilient, and high-bandwidth connectivity, both via satellite and terrestrial networks. This agreement also establishes a clear pathway for future chipset sales as the satellite provider will leverage GCT’s newly released 5G chipset to enable direct-to-satellite applications within its rapidly expanding network. Shipments of the 5G products supporting this initiative are expected to begin as early as the second half of this year.

“This collaboration positions both companies at the forefront of emerging and growing 5G-to-space networks that aim to deliver coverage globally, including underserved regions, and aims to accelerate the industry’s transition toward unified terrestrial-satellite networks,” said John Schlaefer, CEO of GCT. “By combining our advanced 5G semiconductor solutions with the global satellite footprint, we’re enabling a new era of always-on connectivity that is more robust, more flexible, and more accessible than ever before.”

Under the terms of the agreement, GCT will provide access to its chipset portfolio for use in multiple user devices to provide a complete product line of choice for all use cases. With GCT’s expertise in non-terrestrial connectivity and its proprietary mode-switching capabilities, these devices will be well-positioned to surpass expectations shaped by the disappointing performance of the current generation of non-terrestrial equipment.
