excess and surplus lines financial
Excess and surplus lines refer to insurance coverage provided by specialized insurers for risks that standard insurers consider too unusual, high-risk, or hard to cover. These policies are important for investors because they help protect against rare or unexpected events that could impact financial stability or asset values, filling gaps where regular insurance options are unavailable.
wholesale-only distribution financial
Wholesale-only distribution is a sales approach where a company sells products exclusively to intermediaries—large buyers, distributors or wholesalers—who then resell to retailers or other businesses rather than to end consumers. For investors, this matters because it typically lowers selling costs and speeds bulk movement of goods but can reduce profit margins, limit brand control, and concentrate revenue risk in a few large customers—like relying on a few big middlemen to move your product.
risk appetite financial
Risk appetite is the amount and kinds of uncertainty or potential loss an investor or organization is willing to accept in pursuit of returns or goals; think of it like how much spice someone will tolerate in a dish before it becomes unpleasant. It matters because it shapes what investments are chosen, how much volatility a portfolio can endure, and the balance between seeking higher gains and protecting capital.
portfolio optimization financial
Portfolio optimization is the process of arranging and adjusting an investment collection to achieve the best possible balance between potential returns and risk. It’s like fine-tuning a recipe to get the most flavor with the least unwanted ingredients, helping investors make smarter choices about how to allocate their money to meet their financial goals efficiently.

Mike Mulray has been promoted to President of Hamilton Select, effective July 1, 2026. In this new role, Mulray will continue to report to Anita Kuchma, Chief Executive Officer of Hamilton Select and will be responsible for driving Hamilton Select’s next phase of growth, further building out the platform’s product offering and the expansion of its risk appetite to better serve its wholesale broker distribution partners and customers.

In conjunction with this appointment, Daniel Tague has been promoted to Chief Underwriting Officer, Hamilton Select, continuing to report to Mulray. In this role, Tague will lead the underwriting organization and plays a pivotal role in driving portfolio optimization as the business continues to scale and expand its product offering.

“Mike has made a significant impact since joining Hamilton in October 2025, demonstrating strong leadership, strategic insight and a deep commitment to our clients, partners and team,” said Kuchma. “Dan’s underwriting acumen and experience along with his track record of success position him exceptionally well to lead our underwriting function as we continue to expand Hamilton Select’s capabilities and presence in the E&S market.

“These appointments strengthen our leadership team and position Hamilton Select for its next phase of growth, as we continue to invest in talent, build out our product offering and deliver consistent value through our wholesale-focused distribution model.”

Earlier in his career, Mulray held senior enterprise risk management and corporate insurance roles at General Electric Company and began his career at Aon in the US and Bermuda.

Tague has more than 20 years of industry experience across property and casualty underwriting, distribution and regional leadership. He joined Hamilton in August 2023 as Senior Vice President, Excess Casualty at Hamilton Select and most recently led all Casualty businesses for the platform.
