Key Terms

preliminary injunction, 5g patents, frand, 5g-compliant devices, +1 more
5 terms
preliminary injunction regulatory
"awarded a preliminary injunction against Transsion by a court in Brazil"
A preliminary injunction is a court order that temporarily stops a party from taking certain actions while a legal case is ongoing. It’s like a warning sign that prevents someone from moving forward with plans that could cause harm or unfair advantage until the court makes a final decision. For investors, it signals that there may be unresolved legal issues affecting the parties involved, which can impact a company's operations or value.
5g patents technical
"infringement of two InterDigital 5G patents"
5G patents are legal rights that give a company exclusive control over specific inventions and technical methods used in fifth‑generation wireless networks — how devices connect, transmit data, manage signals, or conserve power. They matter to investors because owning or licensing these rights can generate steady royalty income, create a competitive moat, and influence a firm’s future profit potential and valuation, much like owning a toll bridge that others must pay to cross.
frand regulatory
"licensing offer to Transsion to be fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND)"
A FRAND commitment is a promise by a patent holder to license technologies that are essential to an industry standard on terms that are fair, reasonable and non‑discriminatory. For investors it matters because FRAND commitments shape how much a company can earn from licensing, how likely it is to face costly legal fights, and how easily its technology can be adopted across the market—like agreeing on a fair price for using a common recipe so everyone can cook with it without endless dispute.
5g-compliant devices technical
"Transsion is prevented from selling 5G-compliant devices in Brazil"
Devices labeled 5G-compliant are phones, routers, sensors or other hardware built to work with the fifth-generation mobile network standard; they follow the technical rules that let them connect to 5G towers and use its faster speeds, lower delays, and greater capacity. For investors, this matters because widespread 5G compatibility can drive sales, enable new services or business models (like real‑time streaming or industrial automation), and affect a company’s competitive position and revenue potential as networks upgrade.
patents-in-suit regulatory
"Transsion infringes both of the patents-in-suit and that the patents are essential"
Patents-in-suit are the specific patents that are being asserted by one party in a legal lawsuit, meaning those patent rights are at the center of the dispute. For investors, they signal concrete legal and financial risk or opportunity: if the patents are upheld a company may owe damages, pay licensing fees, or face limits on products (like a roadblock), while if the patents are invalidated the perceived liability or competitive advantage may vanish.

WILMINGTON, Del., April 01, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a wireless, video and AI technology research and development company, today announced it has been awarded a preliminary injunction against Transsion by a court in Brazil.

The 3rd Regional Business Court of Rio de Janeiro ruled that InterDigital is entitled to a preliminary injunction resulting from Transsion’s infringement of two InterDigital 5G patents. The court also found InterDigital’s licensing offer to Transsion to be fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND). As a result of the injunction, Transsion is prevented from selling 5G-compliant devices in Brazil.

The decision follows the publication of an independent expert report, commissioned by the Rio court, which fully supported InterDigital's position that Transsion infringes both of the patents-in-suit and that the patents are essential to 5G.

“As a foundational innovator in cellular wireless, our research provides the building blocks for today’s 5G networks and devices and enables newer players like Transsion to quickly scale its business and enter new markets,” commented Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer, InterDigital. “Transsion should pay fair value for technology that it uses every day and cannot be allowed to gain an unfair advantage over so many of its competitors who have paid for a license to our portfolio.”
