The partnership focuses on developing a new Iridium network-enabled NB-IoT chipset based on 3GPP Release 19 requirements. The collaboration aims to enhance GCT's existing 4G/5G chipset capabilities to support Iridium NTN NB-IoT, targeting applications in trackers, satellite phones, and IoT solutions. The service, part of 3GPP Release 19, will provide global standards-based direct-to-device and narrow-band IoT messaging and SOS capabilities for consumer devices, automobiles, and industrial applications. Syniverse's system serves approximately 600 carrier customers in 170 countries and connects over 830 mobile operators. The first Iridium NTN Direct connected devices are expected to be available in 2026, following the completion of 3GPP Release 19 by the end of 2025.

Iridium Communications (NASDAQ: IRDM) has announced a specialized U.S. government version of its Iridium® 9603 module featuring Enhanced Short Burst Data (ESBD) capabilities. The new module provides secure, low-latency messaging with increased payload capacity, designed specifically for the U.S. government and approved allies. This upgrade supports the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services (EMSS) program, offering secure voice, broadcast, and PTT services to Department of Defense subscribers globally.

The ESBD version serves as a drop-in replacement for existing 9603 SBD modules, supporting applications from command and control to asset tracking.
