Key Terms

variable annuity financial
A variable annuity is a long-term contract sold by an insurance company that combines an investment account—where your money is placed into funds that can rise or fall with the market—with an insurance promise to provide future payments or optional guarantees. Think of it as a mutual fund wrapped inside a retirement income plan: it can grow tax-deferred and offer steady payout options, but fees, investment performance and optional guarantees directly affect the return and risk for investors.
FINRA regulatory
FINRA is the U.S. self‑regulatory organization that oversees brokerage firms and individual brokers, setting and enforcing rules to protect investors and keep markets orderly. Think of it as a referee and rulebook keeper for the broker industry: it licenses brokers, monitors their behavior, enforces standards, and runs complaint and arbitration systems, so investors can check records and have a path to resolve disputes.
Series 7 regulatory
A Series 7 is a regulatory exam and license required for financial professionals who sell a broad range of investment products, such as stocks, bonds and options. For investors it matters because it signals that the person advising or handling trades has passed standardized testing and meets industry rules—think of it like a driver's license that shows someone is qualified to operate across many types of investment transactions, improving trust and accountability.
Series 24 regulatory
Series 24 is a professional license that lets a person supervise and manage most activities at a securities firm, including trading, investment banking and sales practices. For investors, knowing a firm has Series 24–qualified supervisors is like knowing a store has a certified manager on duty: it signals that experienced personnel are responsible for compliance and oversight, which can reduce operational and regulatory risk.
