Strong film slate drove multiple all-time summer records at Marcus Theatres

MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Marcus Theatres®, the nation’s fourth largest theatre circuit and a division of Marcus Corporation (NYSE: MCS), announced today that it recorded its highest total revenue for the summer moviegoing season in company history, defined as the first Friday in May through Labor Day.

Fueled by blockbuster hits and a diverse slate of summer releases that appealed to a wide range of audiences, summer records set at Marcus Theatres include:

  • Highest total summer revenue in company history.
  • Highest box office for any summer.
  • Highest summer concession, merchandise, and food and beverage revenue of all time.
  • Highest per capita summer admission revenue and per capita concession, merchandise, and food and beverage spend for the summer moviegoing season.
  • Highest summer attendance since 2019.
  • Highest premium large format screen attendance and percentage of attendance and box office for any summer.

Following the carryover success of Michael, the summer got off to a hot start with The Devil Wears Prada 2 and surprise hits like Obsession and Backrooms. The sustained excitement for Toy Story 5, which had the highest opening weekend for an animated film since 2019, propelled Marcus Theatres to multiple June records. And while The Odyssey continued its record-breaking journey, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide in history, Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung onto the scene, with the biggest domestic opening of all time. Combined, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day led to multiple all-time August records for Marcus Theatres, including highest attendance for the month of August and highest August box office in company history.

The summer of 2026 finished strong as the top grossing summer domestic box office of all time. We estimate more than 335 million people went to see the latest films on the big screen, showcasing the wide-reaching influence and enduring power of moviegoing, and the significant impact it has on the economy.

“Our outstanding summer performance delivered numerous records and lots of happy moviegoers who enjoyed some of the best performing movies of all time on the big screen,” said Jeff Tomachek, president of Marcus Theatres. “The tremendous turnouts for a wide range of diverse films created unique memory-making moments for all audiences – from the tears to the laughter to the thrills and chills – that cannot be replicated at home. As we look ahead to the rest of the year, several new and highly anticipated films await, giving moviegoers even more reason to enjoy a great time at the movies with friends and family.”

The film slate for the remainder of the year includes: Practical Magic 2 (September 11), Resident Evil (September 18), Forgotten Island (September 25), Digger (October 2), Verity (October 2), Other Mommy (October 9), The Social Reckoning (October 9), Street Fighter (October 16), Clayface (October 23), The Cat in the Hat (November 6), Godzilla Minus Zero (November 6), Ebenezer (November 13), The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (November 20), I Play Rocky (November 20), Hexed (November 25), Focker-In-Law (November 25), Dune: Part Three (December 18), Avengers: Doomsday (December 18), The Angry Birds Movie 3 (December 23), Jumanji: Open World (December 25), and Werwulf (December 25).

Key Terms

premium large format technical
A premium large format is a retail location that is noticeably bigger than a typical store and designed to offer a higher-end shopping experience, broader product selection, and more services or displays. Investors care because these stores can generate higher sales per location and strengthen a brand’s market position, but they also require bigger upfront investment and higher operating costs, so profitability and rollout pace determine whether they boost returns or risk capital.
per capita financial
Per capita means “per person” and is calculated by dividing a total figure by the number of people in the relevant population. It turns a raw total—such as sales, income, disease cases, or resource use—into an average on a per-person basis. Investors use per capita measures to compare size or intensity across places or groups of different population sizes, like slicing a pie into equal pieces to see how much each person would get.
