Insights

MELI delivers exceptional growth across all metrics with fintech outpacing commerce, demonstrating powerful ecosystem synergies and increasing monetization.

Mercado Libre has delivered a remarkably strong Q1 with revenue surging 37% to $5.9 billion while operating income grew even faster at 45%, reaching $763 million. This divergence between revenue and profit growth demonstrates impressive operational leverage in the business model. The company's ability to expand margins while investing aggressively in logistics, advertising, and financial services showcases the strength of its business model.

The e-commerce segment posted 32% revenue growth to $3.3 billion, with GMV up 17% in dollars but a much stronger 40% on an FX-neutral basis. The gap between commerce revenue growth and GMV growth indicates significant improvements in monetization efficiency. Notably, the 25% increase in unique buyers represents the strongest new buyer growth since early 2021, suggesting MELI continues capturing significant market share from physical retail, which still accounts for approximately 85% of Latin American retail spending.

The fintech business is emerging as the company's growth engine, with revenue up 43% to $2.6 billion and monthly active users increasing 31% to 64 million. The 103% surge in assets under management to $11.2 billion and 75% growth in the credit portfolio to $7.8 billion are particularly impressive. The credit card portfolio's 111% growth demonstrates accelerating adoption of higher-margin financial products.

Argentina delivered extraordinary performance with FX-neutral GMV growing 126% YoY despite the country's economic challenges. This highlights MELI's resilience in difficult macroeconomic environments and suggests potential for similar performance across other Latin American markets facing economic uncertainty.

The logistical improvements are creating a virtuous cycle of better customer experience and lower operational costs, with same-day and next-day shipping now reaching 50% of orders. This operational excellence creates a significant competitive moat against potential e-commerce competitors while supporting higher purchase frequency.

The expanding advertising business and launch of Mercado Play on 70+ million Smart TVs opens new high-margin revenue streams that leverage MELI's existing user base and first-party data. This diversification beyond traditional e-commerce and payments positions the company as a comprehensive digital ecosystem rather than just a marketplace.
