Montauk Renewables (MNTK) opened its new Turkey, North Carolina facility in Sampson County, a project representing a $200 million agribusiness capital investment.

The company, through subsidiary Montauk Renewables Ag, has entered into long-term agreements with over 80 farming locations, giving access to more than 415,000 hog spaces targeted for the first development phase. State and local officials collaborated to convert a former Bay Valley Foods distribution center into a renewable energy and agribusiness hub expected to provide jobs and expand the local tax base.

Montauk has developed technology to convert swine waste into electricity and produce biochar that, in Senator Brent Jackson’s words, can improve nutrient and water retention in soils and support stronger crop yields.

Key Terms

biochar, renewable natural gas, environmental attribute premiums
3 terms
biochar technical
"the biochar produced here will also improve nutrient and water retention"
Biochar is a charcoal-like material made by heating organic waste (wood, crop residues, manure) in a low-oxygen process, then adding the stable carbon product to soil. It acts like a sponge and a long-term storage box: it can help soil hold water and nutrients while locking carbon away for decades. Investors care because biochar can create revenue from improved crop yields, waste-to-product businesses and emerging carbon-credit or sustainability markets.
renewable natural gas technical
"conversion of biogas into renewable natural gas (RNG)"
Renewable natural gas is methane captured from organic waste—like landfills, farms, or wastewater—and cleaned to the same quality as conventional pipeline gas so it can be used for heating, electricity, or vehicle fuel. Investors care because it turns waste into a revenue-generating commodity, can qualify for carbon credits or government incentives, and can reduce a company's emissions profile, affecting long-term costs, regulatory risk, and market demand much like converting trash into sellable fuel.
environmental attribute premiums regulatory
"taking advantage of Environmental Attribute premiums available under federal and state policies"
Extra price paid for a product, service, or certificate because it carries verified environmental qualities—such as being carbon-free, renewable, or low-emission—above the base market price. Like paying more for organic food because of a label, these premiums reflect buyer willingness to pay for environmental benefits and can create additional revenue or affect costs for companies that produce, certify, or trade those attributes.

The Project Represents $200 Million Agribusiness Investment

TURKEY, N.C., Sept. 15, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Montauk Renewables, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNTK) (“Montauk” or the “Company”) and its subsidiary, Montauk Renewables Ag, LLC, announce that Sampson County leaders joined Montauk’s Chief Executive Officer, Sean McClain, and members of its Board of Directors to celebrate the official opening of the Company’s Turkey, NC facility. The project represents a $200 million capital investment and commitment to rural North Carolina.

“As of the end of August, we have entered into long-term agreements with over 80 separate farming locations, providing us access to more than 415,000 of the hog spaces we are targeting for our first phase of development. Farmers are the backbone of the North Carolina economy, and we are thankful to partner with them and Sampson County,” stated Sean McClain, Montauk Renewables CEO.

State and local officials worked with the Company to transform the former Bay Valley Foods Distribution Center into a major investment providing excellent jobs and expanding the tax base in Sampson County. The Company has developed technology that allows them to transform swine waste into electricity.

Senator Brent Jackson, a Sampson County farmer and leader on agricultural issues in the General Assembly, offered, “I am grateful that agriculture and agribusiness continue to invest and grow in North Carolina. Montauk’s capital investment is great news for Sampson County. This is not only good news for the pork producers, but the biochar produced here will also improve nutrient and water retention, supporting healthier soil and stronger crop yields.”

Senator Jackson serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Base Budget Committee and Chairman of the Agriculture, Energy and Environment Committee in the NC Senate.

Agriculture has an annual economic impact of more than $100 billion for the North Carolina economy, according to the N.C. Department of Agriculture. It is the state’s top industry, supporting roughly one in five jobs and spanning more than 42,000 farms across 8 million acres.
