The introduction of high density scanning capabilities by Matterport, Inc. represents a significant advancement in the 3D capture technology space, which is likely to enhance the company's competitive edge. The ability to capture more than 5 million filtered, real depth points per scan is a substantial improvement over the standard density scan, which may appeal to industries reliant on high-fidelity 3D modeling such as construction, architecture and real estate.

By streamlining as-built modeling workflows, Matterport's new feature could lead to increased productivity and reduced costs for these industries. This innovation could potentially drive higher adoption rates of Matterport's Pro3 camera, potentially boosting sales and market share. The availability of this feature in beta also allows Matterport to gather user feedback and refine the technology, which could further solidify its market position.

However, the market will be watching closely to see if the benefits translate into increased revenue streams and whether Matterport can capitalize on this technological leap to expand its customer base. It will also be important to monitor how competitors respond to this development and whether they introduce similar advancements in their product offerings.

Matterport's announcement of a new high density scanning feature could have a material impact on the company's financial performance. The feature's ability to significantly increase the fidelity of 3D capture at a more accessible price point could attract new customers and increase the utility of the Pro3 camera for existing customers.

Financially, this innovation could lead to an uptick in sales of Pro3 cameras and associated software subscriptions. Moreover, by potentially reducing the time and cost associated with as-built modeling, Matterport may see an increase in customer retention and satisfaction, which can translate into a stronger recurring revenue stream.

Investors will be interested in observing the adoption rate of the high density scanning feature during the beta period, as it could serve as an indicator for future revenue growth. The impact on Matterport's cost structure will also be of interest, as software-based innovations typically have high margins once development costs are covered. It will be essential to analyze future financial statements to assess the actual impact on Matterport's profitability and market position.

The high density scanning capability introduced by Matterport has the potential to revolutionize the as-built modeling process in construction and facilities management. The ability to capture intricate details with high fidelity is crucial for accurate Building Information Modeling (BIM), which is a cornerstone in modern construction projects.

The increased density of data points captured per scan translates into more detailed and precise models, which can significantly reduce errors during the construction phase and facilitate more efficient project management. By providing data in an E57 file format, Matterport ensures compatibility with industry-standard software like Autodesk Revit, which is widely used by professionals in the field.

This technological advancement could lead to a shift in industry standards for 3D scanning and modeling. The ease of integration with existing workflows and the enhanced capabilities at a competitive price point could set a new benchmark for performance in the sector. Construction firms adopting this technology may gain a competitive advantage through improved accuracy and efficiency in their modeling processes.

Software-enabled high density scanning feature now in beta for all Pro3 customers to significantly increase the fidelity of 3D capture and streamline as-built modeling workflows

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 16, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR), announced new high density scanning capabilities for Matterport’s revolutionary 3D camera, Pro3. Available now in beta, high density scanning makes as-built modeling with Matterport even easier, helping streamline workflows, minimize errors, and accelerate project timelines. This continues to widen Matterport’s lead as the best price for performance solution for outstanding imagery and high fidelity digital twin reconstruction.

“As-built” models visualize the existing conditions or current state of a building, documenting key components like ducts and pipes. As-builts, most often rendered in the form of a point cloud file, are foundational to creating Building Information Models (BIM) used in Facilities Management and Design and Construction.

With high density scanning, the Matterport Pro3 can now capture more than 5 million filtered, real depth points per scan, a sixfold increase from a standard density scan with Pro3. This software-based innovation enables incredibly precise rendering of intricate details and thin features commonly found in construction sites, commercial buildings, and other complex structures, removing a common barrier for as-built modeling at a significantly more accessible price point.

Once a space is scanned, customers can access the higher density data in the form of an E57 file, which can be imported to Autodesk Revit and other design and construction software.

Once signed up for the beta, Pro3 users will have three density options to choose from when conducting a scan, providing flexibility for whatever a job requires:

  • Standard Density: Captures 800,000 real depth points per scan in 20 seconds or less.
  • Medium Density: Captures 1.5 million real depth points per scan in 45 seconds or less.
  • High Density: Captures 5 million real depth points per scan in 2 minutes.

Existing Pro3 customers can begin using high-density scanning by joining the beta today. Learn more about which jobs are right for high density scanning on the support page.
