Insights

MXF continues its scheduled $0.22 distribution with 35.33% sourced from return of capital amid strong 5-year returns but modest recent performance.

The Mexico Fund's announced $0.22 per share distribution follows its established Managed Distribution Plan, offering shareholders consistent income regardless of short-term performance fluctuations. The composition breakdown reveals 46.34% comes from net investment income, 18.33% from combined short and long-term capital gains, and a significant 35.33% from return of capital.

This return of capital component warrants attention as it effectively returns investors' principal rather than distributing earned income. While this maintains the distribution level, it can potentially affect the fund's NAV over time if not supported by adequate performance.

The fund's impressive 21.15% five-year average annual total return demonstrates strong long-term results. However, the more modest 2.08% cumulative return for the current fiscal year (since November 1, 2024) indicates recent performance hasn't matched historical trends.

With a current annualized distribution rate of 3.00%, MXF provides moderate income for shareholders. The fund appropriately notes these distribution sources are estimates that may change by fiscal year-end, with final tax characterization to be provided via Form 1099-DIV.

For income-focused investors, this distribution maintains expected yield while the return of capital component offers potential tax advantages, though it requires monitoring within the context of overall fund performance.
