Survey finds 78% of neighbors have missed neighborhood holiday happenings due to lack of awareness, while 7 in 10 neighbors want to support local businesses this season

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As the holiday season kicks into high gear, a new survey from Nextdoor, the essential neighborhood network, reveals a surprising discovery gap: the vast majority of Americans say they've missed out on local holiday activities, like holiday light displays in their own neighborhoods simply because they didn't know about them.

The Nextdoor survey, conducted across the US in early December 2025, found that 78% of respondents have missed neighborhood holiday happenings due to lack of awareness.

"The holidays are all about being together with family, friends and neighbors! But our recent survey shows that neighbors are missing out on the very experiences that make this season special—not because they're not interested, but because they simply don't know what's happening nearby," said Kelsey Grady, Nextdoor’s Chief Communications Officer. "Nextdoor exists to solve this problem by connecting neighbors with hyperlocal information they can't find anywhere else."

The findings underscore a growing need for neighbors to share what they know about local holiday happenings—from the best streets to see Christmas lights to neighborhood tree lightings, winter markets, and community celebrations.

Neighbors Want to Support Local—And Trust Each Other for Recommendations

Additional Nextdoor polling this month revealed that neighbors are eager to support local businesses during the holiday season, with 66% of respondents saying it's important to them to shop local for gifts, activities, and services.

When it comes to finding holiday recommendations—from the best light displays to seasonal events and activities—neighbors trust each other most. Neighbors and local community members were the most trusted source for holiday tips (36%), followed by friends and family (30%), online reviews (12%), social media (11%), and local news (10%).

These findings reinforce what we see on Nextdoor every day: neighbors want to connect with and support their local communities, and they trust each other for the recommendations that matter most. There's no better source for hyperlocal holiday intel than the people who actually live in the area.

Turning Neighbors Into Holiday Guides

Nextdoor is encouraging its more than 100 million verified neighbors to become local holiday guides by sharing their favorite seasonal discoveries using the hashtag #holidays on Nextdoor. Whether it's a town’s best light display, a family-friendly event, a local business offering unique gifts, or a neighborhood tradition worth celebrating, neighbors are uniquely positioned to help each other make the most of the season.

Nextdoor members are encouraged to post about:

  • Local light displays: Share addresses and photos of the best holiday decorations in your area
  • Neighborhood events: Post about tree lightings, holiday markets, caroling events, and community gatherings
  • Family activities: Recommend kid-friendly and pet-friendly seasonal outings nearby
  • Local business finds: Highlight neighborhood shops, restaurants, and services offering holiday specials
  • Traditions and tips: Share what makes the holidays special in your community

Survey Methodology

The Nextdoor holiday surveys were conducted December 2-3, 2025, across 36 U.S. states on Nextdoor. Responses were collected from 12 geographically dispersed states per question: 4,527 neighbors responded to the discovery gap question, 6,140 to the local business question, and 6,792 to the trusted sources question. Responses were then averaged.
