Sentiment and the balance of points
Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.
Rhea-AI Summary
Orchid Island Capital (ORC) reported a third-quarter 2026 net loss of $178.9 million as mortgage-security and derivative losses weighed on results. The loss was $0.90 per common share, compared with net income of $72.1 million a year earlier. Net interest income was $59.1 million, while realized and unrealized losses on mortgage-backed securities and derivatives, including swap interest income, totaled $231.7 million.
Book value fell $1.20 per share to $6.02 at September 30. Dividends declared and paid were $0.30 per share, and total return was negative 12.47%. Liquidity was $515.7 million, approximately 44% of equity. Outstanding repurchase financing was approximately $10.4 billion. Orchid increased hedge coverage to near 100% of funding and extended hedge duration. It repurchased approximately 4.95 million shares during the quarter and approximately 1.67 million in October to date.
How this balance works
Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.
It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.
Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Management Commentary
Commenting on the third quarter results, Robert E. Cauley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, “The third quarter of 2026 presented very challenging market conditions as we witnessed a significant increase in interest rates across the globe. Benchmark U.S. treasury yields reached levels last seen in the early 2000s. The Agency RMBS market was particularly impacted and there was widespread deleveraging and forced selling, with implied interest rate volatility spiking higher as well. Going into the sell-off Orchid had hedge coverage at over
“Our objective was to maximize our book value recovery potential if spreads recovered and/or rates decreased and to sustain the dividend. To the extent our funding levels increase as a result of Fed interest rate hikes, our higher coupon, low premium specified pools should provide enhanced income potential in a slow prepay environment - even more so with the majority of the portfolio now priced below par, allowing for discount accretion. Further buttressing our earnings potential is our nearly

Hedging
In connection with its interest rate risk management strategy, the Company economically hedges a portion of the cost of its repurchase agreement funding against a rise in interest rates by entering into derivative financial instrument contracts. The Company has not elected hedging treatment under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”) in order to align the accounting treatment of its derivative instruments with the treatment of its portfolio assets under the fair value option election. As such, all gains or losses on these instruments are reflected in earnings for all periods presented. At September 30, 2026, such instruments were comprised of U.S. Treasury note (“T-Note”) and Secured Overnight Financing Rate ("SOFR") futures contracts, interest rate swap agreements and to-be-announced ("TBA") securities contracts.
The table below presents information related to the Company’s T-Note and SOFR futures contracts at September 30, 2026.
