Key Terms

autonomy technical
Autonomy is the ability of a system, device, or organization to operate and make decisions without direct human control, like a self-driving car navigating on its own or a business unit running independently from a parent company. Investors care because greater autonomy can lower ongoing labor costs, create new revenue opportunities, change safety and legal risk, and alter competitive positioning — much like replacing a hired driver with a smart machine or giving a team the freedom to move faster.
artificial intelligence technical
Artificial intelligence is the ability of computers and machines to perform tasks that typically require human thinking, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, or making decisions. For investors, it matters because AI can enhance efficiency, uncover new insights, and enable smarter strategies, potentially impacting the value and performance of companies that develop or utilize this technology.
connectivity technical
Connectivity is the ability of devices, systems or people to link and exchange data over networks like the internet, cellular systems or private links, typically judged by speed, coverage and reliability. Like roads for information, better connectivity expands a service’s reach, enables new products and efficiencies, and can change costs and revenue potential — so investors watch it as a driver of growth, risk and competitive strength.
electrification technical
Electrification is the process of replacing systems that run on fuel or other energy sources with electric-powered ones, such as switching from gasoline engines to electric motors. It matters to investors because it often signals a shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy use, potentially transforming industries and creating new opportunities for growth and innovation.
iot technical
The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a network of everyday devices—such as appliances, vehicles, and equipment—that are connected to the internet and can share data automatically. For investors, IoT represents a growing trend that can drive efficiency and innovation across many industries, potentially creating new opportunities for growth and value. Its expansion influences how companies operate and compete in a digitally connected world.
level 4 automation technical
Level 4 automation describes vehicles that can drive themselves without human control in defined areas or conditions, handling steering, braking and navigation end-to-end while a human can take over but does not need to. For investors, it matters because it signals a step toward widespread commercial deployment—like a reliable taxi that only works inside a city—affecting potential revenue, regulatory hurdles, insurance costs and the capital needed to scale the technology.
