usb power delivery technical
USB Power Delivery is a standardized way for electronic devices and chargers to talk to each other and agree on how much power to send, allowing faster, safer charging and the ability to power larger devices through a single cable. Investors care because it influences product compatibility, component demand, manufacturing costs and regulatory compliance across consumer electronics and accessories, much like a common fuel standard shaping an auto market.
extended power range technical
Extended power range describes a device or system’s ability to deliver higher-than-normal power levels for a longer period without failing or triggering safety cutoffs. Investors care because it affects a product’s real-world performance, reliability, regulatory approvals, and competitive position—much like a car that can sustain highway speeds without overheating, a longer power range can make a product more valuable and reduce warranty or replacement costs.
tvs diodes technical
TVS diodes are electronic components that act like a pressure relief valve for electrical systems, absorbing or redirecting sudden bursts of high voltage to protect sensitive circuits. They stop brief surges from lightning, switching events, or static from damaging devices, reducing failures and service costs. Investors care because TVS diodes influence product reliability, warranty expenses and compliance risks, which can affect manufacturing costs, customer satisfaction and long-term revenue.
iec 61000-4-5 technical
IEC 61000-4-5 is an international test standard that defines how to simulate and measure damage from sudden high-voltage electrical surges, like those caused by lightning strikes or power switching, to see whether electronic equipment can withstand them. For investors, certification or compliance with this standard signals that a product is more likely to be reliable, meet regulatory requirements, avoid costly failures or recalls, and reach markets that demand proven surge protection—similar to how crash tests indicate a car’s safety.

TDS5311P delivers near-constant clamping voltage across current and temperature where conventional TVS diodes fall short

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading provider of high-performance semiconductors powering data center networking, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and cellular infrastructure solutions, today announced the TDS5311P, the industry’s first circuit protection device to deliver near-constant clamping voltage for USB Power Delivery (PD) Extended Power Range (EPR) applications at 48 V. The latest addition to its SurgeSwitch® family, the TDS5311P protects power buses (VBus) operating at up to 53 V, purpose-built for the growing class of USB PD EPR systems operating at 48 V across industrial equipment, rugged mobility devices and high-performance portable systems.

As USB PD EPR adoption extends into industrial equipment, rugged mobility devices and high-performance portable systems, designers face a protection gap: conventional TVS diodes clamp inconsistently, with clamping voltage shifting across current levels and temperature ranges. The TDS5311P, built on SurgeSwitch’s surge-rated FET architecture, maintains a nearly constant clamping voltage from the first microsecond of a surge event through maximum rated current, across the full -40°C to +125°C industrial temperature range.

“USB Power Delivery Extended Power Range is bringing 48 V into application environments that demand industrial-grade reliability,” said Tamir Reshef, vice president of product marketing and applications, analog mixed signal and wireless products group at Semtech. “The TDS5311P gives designers the consistent protection behavior those systems require, in a package small enough to fit the space constraints of the devices they’re building.”

The TDS5311P handles 1512 W peak pulse power, 24 A peak pulse current and meets the IEC 61000-4-5 industrial surge standard, all from a 2.0 x 2.0 mm DFN-6 (Dual Flat No-lead) package.

The TDS5311P is available now. Learn more at https://www.semtech.com/products/circuit-protection/tvs-diodes/tds5311p.
