Studsvik has acquired the BlackStarTech product line from Constellation, America's largest carbon-free energy producer. The acquisition combines BlackStarTech's mission-critical energy storage solutions with Studsvik's advanced software capabilities, aimed at modernizing and extending nuclear plant lifespans globally.
The technology, already implemented across various US plants, focuses on plant resiliency and operational cost reduction. The solution will be integrated under the Studsvik Scandpower Group, led by President Art Wharton. According to CEO Karl Thedeen, this acquisition strengthens Studsvik's position in supporting nuclear station resilience.
The company states that the acquisition is not expected to materially impact Studsvik Group's financial results or position during 2025. Silver Tree Advisors served as financial advisors for the transaction.

This collaboration will introduce a product line titled Studsvik AI, Powered by Blue Wave AI Labs. The integration of Studsvik's CASMO5 and SIMULATE5 codes with Blue Wave's Nuclear-AI Platform aims to improve plant operations, reduce fuel costs, and increase overall efficiency. Studsvik Scandpower and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have formed a strategic partnership to enhance the Serpent software for advanced reactor design. This collaboration aims to expand the software's applications in regulatory environments while providing quality assurance through Studsvik's NQA-1 and 10 CFR50 Appendix B program. The partnership will facilitate development of methodologies for advanced reactor modeling and broaden Serpent's utility across various fields, including medical physics and radiation shielding. Non-commercial use of Serpent remains free through VTT.
