Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

"Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) was $7.7 million"
EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. It measures a company's profitability by focusing on the money it makes from its core operations, ignoring expenses like taxes and accounting adjustments. Investors use EBITDA to compare how well different companies are performing financially, as it provides a clearer picture of operational success without the influence of financial structure or accounting choices.

free cash flow financial
"We also generated positive free cash flow of $5.6 million"
Free cash flow is the amount of money a company has left over after paying all its expenses and investing in its business, like buying equipment or updating facilities. It shows how much cash is available to reward shareholders, pay down debt, or save for future growth. This helps investors understand if a company is financially healthy and able to grow.

net debt financial
"net debt decreased $16.4 million to $13.1 million"
Net debt is the total amount a company owes after subtracting the cash and assets it has that can be used to pay off that debt. It shows how much debt is truly a burden, helping investors understand if a company is financially healthy or heavily borrowed. Think of it like calculating how much money you owe after using your savings to pay part of it.

MILWAUKEE, Nov. 04, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Twin Disc, Inc. (NASDAQ: TWIN) today reported results for the first quarter ended September 25, 2026.

Fiscal First Quarter 2027 Highlights

  • Sales increased 10.9% year-over-year to $88.7 million
  • Gross margin of 28.7% consistent with FY 1Q26
  • Net income attributable to Twin Disc of $3.4 million and EBITDA* of $7.7 million
  • Robust six-month backlog of $190.6 million supported by healthy ongoing demand
  • Accelerating order activity and momentum from defense customers in the U.S. and Europe

CEO Perspective

“Our fiscal 2027 first quarter results built on the strong momentum we established in fiscal 2026. Demand remains healthy across our end markets, supporting record six-month backlog of $191 million in the quarter, a 7% increase from fiscal year end. Defense continues to be a powerful growth driver, with accelerating order activity from both U.S. and European customers. Specifically, our Finnish subsidiary Katsa booked significant defense orders during the quarter, and we have also begun to see orders tied to the U.S. Navy’s initial unmanned vessel program reach our order book,” Mr. Batten stated.

“We continue to prioritize investing in our growth, including the expansion of our European footprint, the continued build-out of our manufacturing capabilities in Racine, and evaluating M&A opportunities. All the while, we’ve maintained the financial discipline to strengthen our balance sheet, enhance free cash flow, and reduce net debt. As we move through fiscal 2027, we’re well positioned to drive strong growth and execute against our long-term strategic goals,” Mr. Batten concluded.

First Quarter Results

Sales for the fiscal 2027 first quarter increased 10.9% year-over-year to $88.7 million, primarily driven by strength in the Company’s Veth product line, expanding demand from the defense sector, improved oil and gas demand, and generally strong market conditions across the global enterprise. On an organic basis*, which excludes the impacts of acquisitions and foreign currency exchange, fiscal first quarter 2027 sales increased 11.8% year-over-year.

Beginning in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, all Katsa sales previously classified in Land-Based Transmission are now classified in Industrial. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, $4.7 million in revenue that would previously have been classified in Land-Based Transmission was classified in Industrial.

Twin Disc delivered double-digit sales growth year-over-year in the European, and Asia-Pacific regions including the impact of acquisitions. The distribution of sales across geographical regions remained consistent, with the majority of sales coming from Europe, followed by North America, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.

Gross profit increased 10.9% to $25.4 million compared to $22.9 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2026. First quarter gross margin was 28.7% consistent with the prior year period and reflecting stronger growth in Katsa and Veth, which operate at gross margins below the company average but continue to improve, and partially offset by favorable product mix in Land-Based Transmissions, including higher alternative fuel unit sales.

Marketing, engineering and administrative (ME&A) expense was $20.8 million, consistent with ME&A expense of $20.7 million in the prior year quarter. The slight increase in ME&A expense in fiscal 2027 compared to the prior year first quarter was primarily driven by an inflationary impact to wages and benefits and offset by ongoing expense control.

Net income attributable to Twin Disc for the quarter was $3.4 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, compared to net loss attributable to Twin Disc of ($0.5) million, or ($0.04) per diluted share, for the first fiscal quarter of 2026. The year-over-year change was driven by an increase in operating income and a decrease in interest expense and other expense when compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2026. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) was $7.7 million in the first quarter, an increase of 62.6% compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2026.

On a consolidated basis, the backlog of orders to be shipped over the next six months is approximately $190.6 million, compared to $178.3 million at the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. As a percentage of six-month backlog, inventory decreased from 99.9% at the end of the fourth quarter, to 93.9% at the end of the first quarter. Compared to fiscal first quarter of 2026, cash increased 87.7% to $26.7 million, total debt increased 9.0% to $39.8 million, and net debt* decreased $16.4 million to $13.1 million.

CFO Perspective

Jeffrey S. Knutson, Vice President of Finance, Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Secretary stated, “During the quarter we saw healthy revenue growth and margins resulting in strong earnings per share of $0.24 and a 62.6% increase in EBITDA over the first quarter last year. We also generated positive free cash flow* of $5.6 million and significantly reduced net debt, due in large part to disciplined inventory management, and despite increased capital expenditures in the quarter as we continue to invest in our future growth.”
