Viasat's Inmarsat secures major fleet-wide connectivity upgrade deal with MOL, strengthening maritime business amid growing demand for vessel digitalization.

This deal represents a significant customer expansion for Viasat's Inmarsat division, as Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) upgrades its entire fleet from Fleet Xpress to the premium NexusWave service. The agreement covers diverse vessel types including LNG carriers, oil tankers, and car carriers - indicating broad applicability of the technology across maritime segments.

What's particularly valuable here is the recurring revenue model inherent in NexusWave's fully managed service approach. This isn't just a one-time hardware sale but establishes a long-term service relationship with one of Japan's largest shipping companies. The implementation through local partner JSAT MOBILE Communications also demonstrates Inmarsat's effective channel strategy in the Japanese market.

The technical specifications are impressive - real-world tests showing download speeds of 330-340 Mbps and upload speeds of 70-80 Mbps with 99.9% network availability. These metrics position NexusWave competitively against alternatives in the maritime connectivity space.

The strategic value extends beyond immediate revenue. As vessels increasingly function as "floating offices and homes," Inmarsat is positioning itself at the center of maritime digital transformation. The planned integration with ViaSat-3 Ka-band network suggests a technical roadmap to maintain competitive advantage. This deal validates Viasat's acquisition strategy of Inmarsat, showing successful cross-selling of premium services to existing customers.
