Key Terms

united states patent and trademark office regulatory
A U.S. government agency that reviews and issues patents for inventions and registers trademarks for brand names and logos, acting like an official office that grants property deeds for ideas and branding. Investors care because patents and trademarks can create legal barriers to competition, support higher pricing, enable licensing revenue, and affect a company’s long‑term value and legal risk—so decisions by this office can materially influence a firm’s prospects.
notice of allowance regulatory
A notice of allowance is an official confirmation from a patent office that a patent application has met all necessary requirements and is approved for granting. It signals that the invention is likely to receive legal protection soon, which can be important for investors considering the value and exclusivity of a new product or technology. Think of it as a green light indicating that the invention is on track to become legally protected.
levothyroxine (lt4) medical
A synthetic form of the thyroid hormone that replaces or supplements a body chemical missing in people with an underactive thyroid, helping regulate energy use, heart rate and metabolism — think of it as restoring a missing thermostat signal. It matters to investors because levothyroxine is a widely prescribed, long‑term medication with steady demand, so changes in approvals, patent status, generic competition, pricing, or supply can meaningfully affect drugmakers’ sales and healthcare revenues.
hypothyroidism medical
An underactive thyroid condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough hormones, slowing the body's metabolism and causing fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold and other symptoms. For investors, it matters because prevalence or changes in treatment can affect demand for medicines, diagnostic tests, health-care spending and workforce productivity—think of the body’s thermostat running too low and creating ripple effects across medical costs and related industries.
subcutaneous injections medical
Subcutaneous injections are shots given into the thin layer of fat just beneath the skin, usually with a small needle—think of tucking medicine into a little pocket under your skin. For investors, the delivery route matters because subcutaneous products are often easier for patients to use outside hospitals, can reduce administration costs, affect safety and dosing schedules, and therefore influence a therapy’s market size, pricing, and regulatory prospects.
intellectual property regulatory
Intellectual property are legal rights that protect creations of the mind—such as inventions, brand names, designs, software, or secret formulas—giving the owner control over who can use, copy or sell them. For investors, IP is like owning a blueprint or recipe: it can generate steady income through exclusive sales or licensing, boost a company’s competitive edge and valuation, and also create costs or risks if rights must be defended or challenged in court.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Xeris Biopharma Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: XERS), a fast-growing biopharmaceutical company committed to improving patient lives by developing and commercializing innovative products across a range of therapies, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a Notice of Allowance for its subsidiary Xeris Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s U.S. patent application covering XP-8121, one of its novel product candidates. The Notice of Allowance indicates that the USPTO has determined the application meets the requirements for patentability and is expected to issue as a U.S. patent following standard administrative steps. The allowed claims in this application are specific to the XP-8121 formulation. In parallel, Xeris continues to pursue additional layers of U.S. and international IP protection in the levothyroxine (LT4) technology space.

“We believe XP-8121 has tremendous potential to solve an unmet medical need for hypothyroidism, and this patent represents a key milestone in strengthening our intellectual property protection around this important pipeline program,” said John Shannon, Chief Executive Officer. “It further demonstrates the ability of our XeriSol® platform to enable the development of difficult-to-formulate drugs into subcutaneous injections.”

About XP-8121

XP-8121 is an investigational, ready-to-use liquid formulation of levothyroxine sodium designed for once-weekly subcutaneous injection using Xeris’ proprietary XeriSol® technology. By avoiding the gastrointestinal tract, XP-8121 may address the well-documented limitations of oral levothyroxine, including variable absorption, drug and food interactions, and inconsistent therapeutic effect.
