Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ: ZION) reported third-quarter 2026 net earnings applicable to common shareholders of $262 million, higher year over year. Diluted earnings per share were $1.78, versus $1.48 a year earlier and $3.05 in the second quarter of 2026. Net earnings compared with $221 million and $452 million, respectively.

Net loan charge-offs fell to $3 million from $56 million a year earlier. Customer deposits grew nearly 10% annualized from the second quarter, while loans were flat. Zions attributed flat loan growth to faster loan payoffs and competition. The bank completed its acquisition of Basis Multifamily Finance I, a subsidiary of Basis Investment Group, at the end of July.

Zions expects its moderately asset-sensitive balance sheet to support stronger net interest income in a higher-rate environment, and expects improvement in noninterest income to continue into next year.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Key Terms

net loan charge-offs, asset-sensitive balance sheet, net interest income, noninterest income
4 terms
net loan charge-offs financial
"net loan charge-offs were $3 million, down from $56 million a year ago."
The amount banks and lenders remove from their balance sheets when loans are deemed uncollectible, after subtracting any later recoveries from previously written-off loans. It measures the net loss from borrowers who fail to repay their debts during a reporting period. Investors use it to judge a lender’s credit quality and potential future profits; rising net charge-offs are like a store repeatedly finding unpaid tabs it can’t collect, shrinking earnings and capital cushions.
asset-sensitive balance sheet financial
"our moderately asset-sensitive balance sheet should produce stronger net interest income"
A balance sheet is asset-sensitive when the interest-earning assets reprice or reset to current market rates faster or in larger amounts than the interest-bearing liabilities. That mismatch means changes in market interest rates tend to change a firm’s net interest income in the same direction as rates — rising rates typically boost income and falling rates typically reduce it — and it identifies a specific kind of interest-rate risk exposure rather than a measure of overall financial strength.
net interest income financial
"should produce stronger net interest income in a higher rate environment"
Net interest income is the difference between the interest a financial institution earns on loans and investments and the interest it pays on deposits and borrowings. It matters to investors because it is a primary source of profit for banks and similar firms — like the gross margin on a store’s trade — and changes with loan growth, deposit costs and interest rates, so it signals core earning power and sensitivity to rate moves.
noninterest income financial
"continued improvement in noninterest income that we expect will continue into next year."
Noninterest income is the money a bank or financial firm earns from activities other than charging interest on loans, such as account fees, transaction charges, advisory and underwriting fees, trading gains, and service income — like a store making extra money from repairs, warranties or delivery charges rather than product sales. It matters to investors because it shows how diversified a company’s revenue is and whether it can withstand changes in interest rates; a strong noninterest income stream can stabilize profits but may also be more variable than steady loan interest.

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Zions Bancorporation, N.A. (NASDAQ: ZION) ("Zions" or "the Bank") today reported net earnings applicable to common shareholders of $262 million, or $1.78 per diluted common share, for the third quarter of 2026. This compares with net earnings of $221 million, or $1.48 per diluted common share, in the third quarter of 2025, and $452 million, or $3.05 per diluted common share, in the second quarter of 2026.

Harris H. Simmons, Chairman and CEO of Zions Bancorporation, commented, "Third quarter earnings per share increased 20% to $1.78, up from $1.48 a year ago. The higher earnings were primarily a reflection of improved credit quality, as net loan charge-offs were $3 million, down from $56 million a year ago. Although an increased pace of loan payoffs, combined with a highly competitive market, produced flat loan growth compared to the second quarter, customer deposits grew nearly 10% annualized from second quarter levels."

Mr. Simmons continued, "Short- and medium-term interest rates began to rise in the last month of the quarter, and we expect that our moderately asset-sensitive balance sheet should produce stronger net interest income in a higher rate environment, while we're seeing continued improvement in noninterest income that we expect will continue into next year."

Mr. Simmons concluded, "We were pleased to complete the acquisition of Basis Multifamily Finance I, LLC, a subsidiary of Basis Investment Group, at the end of July. This multifamily finance platform becomes an important strategic advantage in serving our commercial real estate clients, particularly in the fast-growing western markets we serve."
