alternative investments financial
"investment income from alternative investments"
Alternative investments are assets outside traditional stocks, bonds and cash, such as real estate, private equity, hedge funds, commodities, collectibles, and venture capital. They matter to investors because they can provide different sources of return and risk, like adding a new flavor to a meal, helping diversify a portfolio, potentially smoothing volatility or boosting long-term returns when conventional markets struggle.
annualized return financial
"represents an annualized return of approximately 5%"
Annualized return is the average yearly rate of growth for an investment over a multi‑year period, expressed as if the money grew at a steady compounded rate each year. It matters to investors because it lets you compare performance across different time frames and investments—like converting a trip’s total travel time into an average speed (miles per hour) so you can fairly compare routes or vehicles—and shows the effect of compounding on your gains.
mark-to-market movement financial
"includes mark-to-market movement that is reflected in adjusted net earnings"
adjusted net earnings financial
"reflected in adjusted net earnings"
Adjusted net earnings are a company’s reported profit after removing one-time, unusual or non-cash items (like asset write-downs, restructuring costs or large legal settlements) so investors can see the recurring core profit. Think of it like looking at a household’s monthly budget after excluding a rare emergency expense; it helps investors judge ongoing business health and compare performance across periods without distortion from isolated events.
unconsolidated affiliates financial
"classified as investments in unconsolidated affiliates"
Companies in which a reporting firm owns a meaningful stake but does not have control, so their assets and liabilities are not merged into the reporting firm's financial statements. For investors, unconsolidated affiliates matter because the parent’s exposure to profits, losses and risks from those businesses appears differently—often as a single investment line or share of income—so you need to look beyond headline figures to judge the parent’s true economic ties and risks, like being a silent partner rather than the manager.
