How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Adjusted EBITDA financial
"Adjusted EBITDA increased 55% to ¥42.1 billion"
Adjusted EBITDA is a way companies measure how much money they make from their core operations, like running a business, by removing certain costs or income that aren’t part of regular business activities. It helps investors see how well a company is doing without distractions from unusual expenses or gains, making it easier to compare companies or track performance over time.
Gross Merchandise Value financial
"GMV increased 20% year-on-year to ¥5.56 trillion"
Total dollar value of all goods and services sold through a marketplace or e-commerce platform during a set period, before deducting fees, returns or costs. Think of it as the total amount rung up at the register across an entire shopping mall: it shows the platform’s sales volume and user activity. Investors watch it to gauge growth and marketplace traction, but must pair it with metrics like revenue share and margins to assess profitability.
Take Rate financial
"Take Rate increased 0.1 percentage point year-on-year to 1.74%"
Take rate is the share of a platform’s total transaction volume that the platform keeps as revenue, usually expressed as a percentage of the money that passes through it. Investors watch take rate because it shows how well a business converts activity into income — like a marketplace owner keeping a slice of every sale — and changes in the take rate can signal improving monetization, pricing power, or margin pressure.
effective interest rate method financial
"included in the calculation under the effective interest rate method"

PayPay Corporation Reports

Second Quarter Ended September 30, 2026 Financial Results

Another strong quarter, with Total Revenue up 28% year-on-year, Profit for the period of ¥18.4 billion and Adjusted EBITDA Margin of 36%, exceeding guidance

Raises guidance for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, with Total Revenue expected to reach ¥474 to ¥478 billion and Adjusted EBITDA of ¥159 to ¥163 billion

TOKYO, Japan, November 4 (November 3 EST), 2026 – PayPay Corporation (NASDAQ: PAYP) ("PayPay" or the "Company") today released its unaudited financial results for the second quarter ended September 30, 2026, prepared in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards, as well as managerial results.

Financial Highlights

Second Quarter ended September 30, 2026

•
Total Revenue - Total Revenue grew 28% year-on-year to ¥118.1 billion, propelled by solid double-digit momentum across both segments—with Payment segment revenue up 27% and Financial Service segment revenue up 38% year-on-year. Our high-frequency payments touchpoint continues to provide a foundation for deepening customer relationships across credit card, banking and securities services.

o
Payment Segment - Total Revenue grew 27% year-on-year to ¥96.7 billion, outpacing the 20% year-on-year growth in Payment Segment GMV (Gross Merchandise Value). This reflected both solid GMV growth and an increase in Take Rate, including payment-related revenue. GMV increased 20% year-on-year to ¥5.56 trillion. This solid growth was achieved despite temporary headwinds from a high prior-year comparison driven by elevated "Hometown Tax Donation(1)" demand in September 2025 ahead of government rule changes, as well as prolonged rainfall during the quarter, particularly in September 2026, that weighed on offline payment activity. Online channel GMV increased 40% year-on-year. PayPay Credit GMV (payments made by linking a PayPay Card to the PayPay app) and PayPay Card GMV (payments made using a physical PayPay Card) increased 25% and 28% year-on-year, respectively. Increased usage of PayPay Credit and PayPay Card continued to support GMV growth, driven by promotional initiatives including the “Super PayPay Festival” and campaigns linked to SoftBank mobile plans. Take Rate increased 0.1 percentage point year-on-year to 1.74%. This increase was supported by a higher share of online payments in GMV, increased interest income from expanding credit card financing balances, and lower point expenses deducted from Total Revenue following the comprehensive review of point reward programs in June 2026. Specific promotional campaigns with municipalities also contributed. Online payments accounted for 19% of combined PayPay Balance and PayPay Credit GMV, up 3 percentage points year-on-year. In addition, credit card financing balances continued to expand, led by revolving, installment payment and cash advances balances, which increased 26% year-on-year on a combined basis.

•
PayPay MTU (Monthly Transacting Users) - Reached 42.22 million, up 9% year-on-year, or 3.32 million users. Registered users increased 6% to 75.6 million. With PayPay MTU growth outpacing PayPay registered user growth, the active rate—calculated as PayPay MTU divided by registered users—increased 1 percentage point year-on-year to 56%.
•
Payment Segment Monthly GMV per MTU - Increased 9% year-on-year to ¥43,746. Broader use of PayPay Credit and PayPay Card alongside PayPay Balance supported higher transaction frequency and a higher average ticket size. Monthly GMV per MTU also continued to trend upward across all customer cohorts grouped by registration month.

1

•
Financial Service Segment - Total Revenue grew 38% year-on-year to ¥22.9 billion, driven primarily by increased interest income. The number of deposit accounts at PayPay Bank reached 10.45 million, while deposit balances increased 16% year-on-year to ¥2.4 trillion. Loan balances increased 37% year-on-year to ¥1.4 trillion, reflecting growth in mortgages, consumer and business loans. Growth in interest-earning assets, including loans and investments, together with higher interest rates following policy rate hikes, drove a 70% year-on-year increase in interest income. PayPay Securities accounts increased 28% year-on-year to 1.88 million.

•
Total Transaction Cost - Total Transaction Cost represented 24% of Total Revenue, compared with 22% in the same period of the previous fiscal year. The increase largely reflected higher costs associated with the rising interest rate environment and higher credit costs associated with the growth in credit card financing balances. At the same time, we continued to improve efficiency in settlement-related costs. Settlement-related costs increased 13% year-on-year on a consolidated basis, well below the 20% growth in Total GMV. This cost efficiency was supported by an improved funding source mix following the "Changes to Other Credit Card Usage on PayPay" implemented in July 2026.
•
Revenue Growth and Operating Leverage Improved Profitability - Revenue grew in both our Payment and Financial Service segments. While Total Transaction Cost increased with the expansion of GMV and financial balances, revenue growth outpaced operating expense growth, resulting in operating leverage. In addition, we curbed the increase in operating expenses through measures including efforts to contain growth in point reward expenses through revision of our point rewards program in June 2026, a shift toward funding sources with relatively lower costs, and continued control of outsourcing and other expenses. These factors contributed to a 55% year-over-year increase in Adjusted EBITDA to ¥42.1 billion and a 6-percentage-point increase in Adjusted EBITDA margin to 36%. Profit for the period was ¥18.4 billion, down 75% year-on-year. The prior-year period included a one-time tax benefit of ¥57.5 billion resulting from the recognition of deferred tax assets at PayPay Corporation. Excluding this benefit from the prior-year period, profit for the period increased year-on-year.

(1)
Hometown Tax Donation (Furusato Nozei): A Japanese tax incentive program that allows taxpayers to donate to local municipalities of their choice. In turn, donors receive tax credits for income and resident taxes (for amounts exceeding ¥2,000) and typically receive local specialty products as thank-you gifts.

Notes:

(1) Share of loss of investments accounted for using the equity method includes share of loss of a joint venture accounted for using the equity method.

(2) Share-based payment expenses represent compensation granted to directors, officers, and employees in exchange for their services, consisting of equity-settled awards (non-cash expenses) and cash-settled awards (expenses involving future cash outflows). These expenses are recognized by allocating the fair value of each award over its respective vesting period. Following the completion of PayPay’s IPO, the cumulative amount relating to prior periods was recognized in a lump sum in the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2026. Notably, in the calculation of Adjusted EBITDA, only equity-settled share-based payment expenses are adjusted as non-cash items, while cash-settled expenses are not adjusted.

(3) Includes one-time expenses associated with the early termination of license agreements in connection with the transition to in-house system development.

(4) Listing-related expenses consist of the fees and expenses of the professional advisors that we hired in connection with the preparations for our initial public offering.

(5) M&A-related expenses consist of the fees and expenses of the professional advisors that we hired in connection with acquisitions and investments and accrued expenses related to holdbacks in connection with a prior acquisition.

(6) Net interest expense (income) from corporate borrowings and treasury assets comprises interest expense on our interest-bearing debt incurred for general corporate purposes, offset by interest income derived from guarantee deposits, cash and cash equivalents, and Japanese government securities within the payment segment. Corporate borrowings exclude funding raised in the ordinary course of our banking, credit card and other financial services operations.

(7) Adjusted EBITDA Margin is calculated as Adjusted EBITDA divided by Total Revenue.

In some cases, you can identify these statements by forward-looking words such as “expectation,” “forecast,” “anticipation,” “intention,” “plan,” “possibility,” “may,” “will,” “should,” “anticipate,” “could,” “would,” “target,” “project,” “contemplate,” “believe,” “estimate,” “predict,” “potential,” “goal,” “objective,” “seek,” or “continue,” the negative of these terms and other comparable terminology. Forward-looking statements in this release may relate to, but are not limited to, expectations of future results of operations or financial performance of the Company, including expectations related to full-year and quarter Total Revenue growth and Adjusted EBITDA, expectations regarding certain of our key financial and operating metrics, our business and growth strategy, including future product development plans, our market opportunity, the performance of newly launched products and innovations, our technological capabilities, the demand for the Company’s products and services, our expectations and management of future growth and acceleration, and our expectations regarding our industry and traditional banks, as well as assumptions relating to the foregoing. These statements involve known and unknown risks, uncertainties and other important factors that may cause our actual results, performance or achievements to be materially different from any future results, performance or achievements expressed or implied by the forward-looking statements. These risks and uncertainties include risks related to our ability to manage our growth effectively; our ability to attract new users, retain our active users and expand the scope of our relationship with our active users; our ability to attract new merchants to utilize our services, grow our relationships with our existing merchants, and increase transaction volumes across our payment settlement services; our ability to maintain and expand synergies between our code-based payment settlement services and our credit card payment services; our ability to maintain and strengthen the ecosystem effects of our platform; our alliances with the shareholders of our consolidated subsidiaries and equity-method affiliates; changes in the expansion and development of the cashless payments industry and the digital financial services industry in Japan; our ability to implement pricing strategies and expand our service offerings; our ability to maintain, protect, and enhance our strong and trusted brand; our ability to maintain or improve our technology infrastructure; and the complex and evolving laws and regulations applicable to our business and the banking ecosystem. Non-IFRS Financial Measures and Key Metrics

This release includes financial information prepared in accordance with IFRS Accounting Standards as issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (“IFRS”). This release also includes non-IFRS financial information, which should be considered supplemental to, not a substitute for, or superior to, the financial measures calculated in accordance with IFRS. Some of the non-IFRS financial measures that are included in this release are Adjusted EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA Margin. We use these non-IFRS financial measures in conjunction with IFRS measures to evaluate our operating performance, formulate business plans, prepare budgets and forecasts, and make strategic decisions, including those relating to operating expenses and the allocation of internal resources. We believe that these non-IFRS financial measures provide useful information to investors, analysts, and others about our business and financial performance, enhance their overall understanding of our performance, and can assist in providing a more consistent and comparable overview of our financial performance across periods. There are a number of limitations related to the use of these non-IFRS financial measures and their nearest IFRS equivalents. For example, the Company’s definitions of non-IFRS financial measures may differ from non-IFRS financial measures used by other companies. For reconciliations to the most directly comparable IFRS measure, see the financial tables attached to this release. However, the Company is unable to provide a reconciliation of certain non-IFRS guidance measures to the corresponding IFRS measures on a forward-looking basis without unreasonable effort due to the unpredictability of the amounts and timing of events affecting the items we exclude from the non-IFRS measures. Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is important to note that material changes to reconciling items could have a significant effect on future IFRS results. Additionally, this release includes key operating metrics that we use to evaluate our operating performance, formulate business plans, and make strategic decisions.
