Aligos Therapeutics (ALGS) announced clinical and preclinical liver-disease findings for five presentations at The Liver Meeting 2026 in Denver.

In nine participants, inflammatory cytokine expression fell from baseline after pevifoscorvir sodium treatment, then increased during entecavir-only follow-up. Laboratory studies showed its active parent compound inhibited two hepatitis B virus DNA forms with similar potency, including one associated with viral DNA integration into the host genome.

ALG-170675 reduced hepatitis B surface antigen more than bepirovirsen in a mouse model and has advanced to Phase 1 studies in China with partner Amoytop. ALG-215007 inhibited hepatitis delta virus replication across multiple cellular systems in laboratory testing.

6 terms
antisense oligonucleotide medical
"ALG-170675, a next-generation HBV antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)"
An antisense oligonucleotide is a small piece of synthetic genetic material designed to attach to specific molecules in the body’s cells, effectively blocking or modifying how genes are expressed. This technology is important because it can be used to develop targeted treatments for certain diseases, which may influence the value of biotech companies and the broader healthcare sector. Its development reflects advances in personalized medicine and gene-based therapies.
rnase h medical
"with dual RNase H and human TLR8 agonist activities"
RNase H is an enzyme that recognizes and cuts the RNA strand of an RNA–DNA hybrid, helping cells remove RNA primers during DNA replication and process RNA bound to DNA. For investors, it matters because RNase H activity is a key mechanism targeted or leveraged by certain genetic and antiviral therapies, diagnostics, and lab tools; its presence or inhibition can determine how some drugs work or how biotechnologies are developed.
pharmacokinetics medical
"efficacy in an AAV-HBV mouse model, pharmacokinetics and safety"
Pharmacokinetics is the study of how a substance, such as a drug or chemical, moves through and is processed by the body over time. It tracks how it is absorbed, distributed, broken down, and eventually eliminated. For investors, understanding pharmacokinetics helps gauge the effectiveness, safety, and potential risks of new medications or treatments, which can influence a company’s success and valuation in the healthcare industry.
nucleos(t)ide analog medical
"with the nucleos(t)ide analog entecavir (ETV)"
A nucleos(t)ide analog is a drug molecule that closely resembles a natural nucleoside or nucleotide—the building blocks of DNA and RNA—and is designed to interfere with nucleic acid synthesis. Nucleoside analogs lack a phosphate and must be converted inside cells by kinases into phosphorylated (active) forms, while nucleotide analogs already contain a phosphate or a chemically masked phosphate and therefore require fewer activation steps; once activated, these analogs can be incorporated by viral or cellular polymerases into growing DNA or RNA strands to cause chain termination or introduce errors that block further replication. Because they act during nucleic acid synthesis, their activity depends on cellular or viral enzymes for activation and on the replication machinery they target, and resistance can arise from changes in those enzymes or in the drug activation pathways.
hepatocellular carcinoma medical
"cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression"
Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common form of primary liver cancer, arising from the main functional cells of the liver. For investors it matters because its serious health impact drives demand for diagnostic tests, treatments and long-term care; progress in trials or approvals can change a drugmaker’s revenue outlook much like a successful product launch can reshape a company’s future.
hbsag medical
"deeper HBsAg knockdown than bepirovirsen in a head-to-head comparison"
HBsAg is a protein that appears on the surface of the hepatitis B virus and is detected by medical tests to show whether someone currently carries or is infectious with hepatitis B. For investors, HBsAg matters because it is a primary diagnostic and regulatory marker used in drug and vaccine trials, blood screening, and public-health programs; shifts in testing, treatment, or prevalence can affect the commercial prospects and approval pathways for related medical products.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 05, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Aligos Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGS), a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on improving patient outcomes through best-in-class therapies for liver and viral diseases, today announced positive data from five presentations at the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease’s (AASLD) The Liver Meeting® 2026, being held November 5 – 9, 2026 in Denver, CO.

“The data the team will present at The Liver Meeting® underscores the strength of our pipeline,” stated Lawrence Blatt, Ph.D., M.B.A., Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Aligos Therapeutics. “The pevifoscorvir sodium findings provide important new insights into the potential of a potent CAM-E compound to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines which have been linked to disease progression in chronic HBV infection and inhibit viral HBV DNA forms associated with integration. The preclinical profile of ALG-170675, our potentially best-in-class HBV antisense oligonucleotide, which is currently progressing through a Phase 1 study in China with our partner Amoytop, further supports the promise of our next-generation approaches in chronic HBV infection. Together, these data reinforce our strategy of applying deep scientific expertise to develop potentially best-in-class therapies that can meaningfully improve patient outcomes.”

Pevifoscorvir Sodium

The data being presented will highlight findings from an investigator initiated, long term follow up study of nine HBeAg+ participants who completed 96 weeks of pevifoscorvir sodium 300 mg monotherapy, followed by 24–48 weeks of treatment with the nucleos(t)ide analog entecavir (ETV). Following pevifoscorvir sodium treatment, expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines was reduced from baseline, with increases observed during the ETV only follow up period. As persistent immune activation and inflammatory signaling are associated with disease progression in chronic HBV infection, the observed cytokine changes provide evidence that reduction in HBV biomarkers (HBV DNA, HBV RNA, antigens) by pevifoscorvir sodium may exert immunomodulatory effects. These findings are consistent with published literature linking inflammatory cytokine profiles in chronic HBV infection with immune mediated fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression1.

Additionally, preclinical in vitro data demonstrate that ALG-001075, the active parent moiety of pevifoscorvir sodium, inhibited the formation of both relaxed circular DNA (rcDNA) and double-stranded linear DNA (dslDNA), the precursor form for HBV DNA integration into the host genome, with similar potency across multiple HBV cell models. In contrast, the NAs tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and entecavir (ETV) were consistently less potent against inhibition of dslDNA than rcDNA formation. These data suggest that capsid assembly modulators may have greater potential than NAs to prevent HBV DNA integration, which can contribute to disease progression and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.

ALG-170675

Preclinical data for ALG-170675, a next-generation HBV antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) with dual RNase H and human TLR8 agonist activities, will highlight deeper HBsAg knockdown than bepirovirsen in a head-to-head comparison in an AAV-HBV mouse model, supporting its potential best-in-class profile. ALG-170675 has advanced to Phase 1 clinical studies.

Preclinical

The preclinical posters will showcase Aligos’ and its collaborators’ continued innovation and commitment to advancing next-generation therapies in the liver and viral spaces with presentations spanning novel approaches and mechanistic insights.

Additionally, in vitro data from the hepatitis delta virus (HDV) program will show that the ASO ALG-215007 potently inhibited HDV replication across multiple cellular systems. These data suggest that the novel approach of directly targeting HDV replication could be a valuable addition to the current therapeutic arsenal.
