3 terms
longitudinal clinical study medical
"began advancing toward a first-of-its-kind longitudinal clinical study"
A longitudinal clinical study tracks the same group of patients over months or years to observe how a treatment or disease progresses, rather than taking a one-time snapshot. For investors, these studies reveal long-term safety, effectiveness and durability of a therapy—information that helps assess regulatory risk, future sales potential and whether early positive results will hold up over time, much like watching a sapling grow into a full tree.
neuroimaging medical
"integrating biological, clinical, neuroimaging, digital and patient-reported data"
Neuroimaging is the set of medical techniques that create pictures or maps of the brain’s structure and activity, like using a camera or GPS to see what parts of the brain look like and how they behave. For investors, neuroimaging matters because it provides objective evidence used in clinical trials, product development and regulatory decisions, helping judge whether a therapy or device is likely to work, reduce risk, and reach the market.
precision medicine medical
"aims to establish a scalable precision medicine framework for depression"
Precision medicine uses a person’s unique genetic makeup, lifestyle and environment to choose treatments and preventive steps that are more likely to work for them than one-size-fits-all approaches. For investors, it matters because it can make therapies more effective and efficient—think tailoring a suit rather than buying off the rack—affecting drug development costs, market size, pricing power and the speed at which therapies win regulatory approval.

PASADENA, Calif., Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. (NYSE: ARE), the first, longest-tenured and pioneering owner, operator and developer of collaborative Megacampus™ ecosystems in AAA life science and advanced technology innovation clusters, today celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Prix Galien USA in New York City and its longstanding strategic partnership with the Galien Foundation, a premier global organization dedicated to recognizing and advancing scientific innovation that improves human health. For more than two decades, Alexandria has been a driving force in the creation and growth of New York City's commercial life science ecosystem, bringing together mission-critical infrastructure, strategic venture capital and world-class talent to catalyze and grow innovative life science companies.

At today's Galien Forum USA, Alexandria will lead a panel discussion on the Multi-Modal Assessment and Phenotyping in Depression (MAP-D) initiative, titled "Cracking the Code of Depression: The MAP-D Initiative." The panel will feature leading experts in neuroscience research, patient care, policy and drug development including Amit Etkin, MD, PhD, founder and chief executive officer of Alto Neuroscience; Steve Hoffmann, senior vice president and chief preclinical officer of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH); Husseini Manji, MD, professor at Oxford University, chair of the UK Government Mental Health Goals Program and former global head of neuroscience at Johnson & Johnson; and Mark Mintun, MD, group vice president of neuroscience research and development at Eli Lilly and Company. The panel will be co-moderated by Joel S. Marcus, executive chairman and founder of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc./Alexandria Venture Investments and Lynne Zydowsky, PhD, chief of science of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc./Alexandria Venture Investments.

As the FNIH's founding strategic partner on the MAP-D initiative, Alexandria provided the first funding and helped secure the cross-sector support required to launch the pioneering public-private partnership. In June 2026, the MAP-D initiative completed its critical design phase and began advancing toward a first-of-its-kind longitudinal clinical study integrating biological, clinical, neuroimaging, digital and patient-reported data to generate one of the most comprehensive depression research datasets ever assembled. The three-year pilot will leverage advanced artificial intelligence models to identify relationships between biological markers and patient outcomes. Ultimately, the MAP-D initiative aims to establish a scalable precision medicine framework for depression to accelerate scientific discovery and extend its impact beyond depression to other serious mental illnesses, with the potential to serve as a defining blueprint for precision mental health over the next decade.

"For 20 years, the Prix Galien USA has recognized outstanding scientific achievements that have changed the course of human health, and Alexandria is deeply proud of our founding partnership with the Galien Foundation and our shared commitment to advancing life-changing innovation," said Mr. Marcus. "Driven by our noble mission to advance human health, Alexandria Venture Investments (AVI) is the second most active institutional life science investor in NYC, providing strategic capital and expertise to companies pursuing novel approaches across oncology, neuroscience, gene therapy and AI-enabled drug discovery. Our first investment, Intra-Cellular Therapies, Inc. (ITCI), became one of the city's most compelling biotechnology success stories, culminating in its $14.6 billion acquisition by Johnson & Johnson in 2025."

Alexandria's venture investment leadership in NYC dates back to 2002, when AVI participated in ITCI's Series A financing, beginning a longstanding strategic and financial relationship with Sharon Mates, PhD, founder, former chairman and chief executive officer of ITCI. ITCI advanced category-defining neuroscience research from discovery through clinical development, went public and grew into a leading biopharmaceutical company with the commercialization of CAPLYTA®, a treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar depression. Dr. Mates led the company from founding through its historic exit, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to ITCI and the NYC life science ecosystem. Mr. Marcus served on ITCI's board of directors from 2006 through its acquisition.

In October 2025, AVI participated in the oversubscribed $101 million Series A financing of NYC-based Nilo Therapeutics (Nilo), alongside leading life science investors and the Gates Foundation. Nilo represents a new generation of innovative companies emerging from NYC's world-class life science ecosystem. The company is developing a novel class of medicines designed to harness the body's neural circuits to regulate immune function and inflammation, with the potential to address a broad range of immune-mediated diseases.

Eikon Therapeutics (Eikon), an AVI portfolio company with its East Coast operations at the Alexandria Center® for Life Science – NYC, is advancing a pipeline of oncology medicines under the leadership of renowned pharmaceutical executive Roger Perlmutter, MD, PhD. In February 2026, Eikon completed an upsized $381 million initial public offering, marking a significant milestone and demonstrating the continued growth of an AVI-backed company within Alexandria's NYC ecosystem.
