Key Terms

t-cell immunotherapy medical
A treatment that uses a person’s own immune T cells—sometimes modified in a lab—to hunt and destroy diseased cells such as cancer. Think of it as retraining or upgrading the body’s soldiers to recognize a specific enemy. Investors care because these therapies can command high prices, require complex manufacturing and regulatory approval, and their commercial success or failure can significantly affect a company’s revenues and risk profile.
allogeneic medical
Allogeneic describes a process or material involving different individuals of the same species, such as cells, tissues, or organs donated from one person to another. It is important to investors because products or treatments based on allogeneic sources can enable scalable, off-the-shelf solutions, potentially reducing costs and increasing accessibility in healthcare and biotech industries.
epstein-barr virus (ebv) medical
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common virus that causes infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) and can stay dormant in the body long-term, sometimes contributing to chronic symptoms or rare cancers. Investors care because EBV drives demand for diagnostics, treatments and vaccines, and outbreaks or new clinical trial results can affect the revenue and valuation of healthcare companies much like a supply or product breakthrough shifts a factory’s output and market prospects.
biologics license application (bla) regulatory
A biologics license application (BLA) is a formal request to a government agency seeking approval to sell a biological medicine, such as vaccines or gene therapies, in the market. It is similar to a detailed report that proves the product is safe, effective, and manufactured properly. For investors, a BLA signifies a critical step toward commercial availability, often impacting a company's valuation and market prospects.
complete response letter (crl) regulatory
A complete response letter (CRL) is an official communication from a drug or medical device regulator saying an approval application cannot be approved in its current form and listing specific problems that must be fixed. For investors, a CRL is like a referee pausing a game and listing rule violations — it signals extra time, cost and uncertainty before a product can reach market, and it often prompts a reassessment of a company’s near-term prospects.
type a meeting regulatory
A Type A meeting is an urgent, short-notice session requested between a company and a regulatory agency (for example, the FDA in the U.S.) to resolve critical issues that block a development program, such as a clinical hold or safety concern. Investors care because the outcome can immediately affect whether a clinical trial or approval process resumes, changing timelines, costs and the company’s near-term value — like calling an emergency mechanic when a car won’t start so a trip can continue.
u.s. food and drug administration (fda) regulatory
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a government agency responsible for protecting public health by ensuring the safety and effectiveness of food, medicines, vaccines, and other health-related products. For investors, the FDA’s decisions can significantly impact companies in the healthcare and food industries, as approval or rejection of products can influence a company's success and stock performance.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Atara Biotherapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRA), a leader in T-cell immunotherapy, leveraging its novel allogeneic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) T-cell platform to develop transformative therapies for patients with cancer and autoimmune diseases, today announced that a Type A meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been scheduled to discuss the Complete Response Letter (CRL) to the Biologics License Application (BLA) for tabelecleucel (tab-cel) held by our partner Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals.

Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals, with Atara’s support, will meet with the agency to collaboratively address the points from the CRL and enable a resubmission with the additional efficacy data that has been collected since the original BLA submission.

“We are pleased that the FDA has granted a Type A Meeting to our partner, Pierre Fabre, and hope to gain clarity on a path forward for re-submission of the tab-cel BLA,” said Cokey Nguyen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Atara. “We anticipate providing a regulatory update in the second quarter.”
