Key Terms
embodied carbontechnical
Embodied carbon is the total greenhouse gas emissions produced across the life cycle of a building, product, or project — from extracting raw materials, manufacture and transport, to construction and disposal. Think of it as the “hidden weight” of emissions built into something before it’s even used; investors care because high embodied carbon can signal future regulatory costs, supply-chain disruption, resale or tenant risk, and changing demand as markets and laws favor lower-emission assets.
operational carbontechnical
Operational carbon is the greenhouse gas output produced by the everyday activities needed to run a business — think of the fuel and electricity burned to power factories, offices, vehicles and equipment. Investors care because these ongoing emissions translate into real costs and risks (higher utility bills, carbon taxes, stricter regulations, or damaged reputation), and reducing them can improve profitability and lower the chance that assets become unexpectedly expensive or obsolete.
sustainability criteriatechnical
Sustainability criteria are a set of measurable standards used to judge whether a company’s operations, products or investments avoid harm and support long-term environmental, social and governance goals. Think of them as a checklist or recipe that investors use to compare how well firms manage risks like pollution, worker treatment or board oversight; meeting stronger criteria can signal lower regulatory, reputational and financial risk and affect investment decisions and valuations.
LANCASTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Armstrong World Industries, Inc., a leader in the design and manufacture of innovative interior and exterior architectural applications including ceilings, specialty walls and exterior metal solutions, has been named one of America’s Greenest Companies by Newsweek for the second year in a row.
President and Chief Executive Officer Vic Grizzle said, “Being named one of America’s Greenest Companies for 2026 reinforces the impact of the work we are doing across our business. Sustainability is fundamental to how we innovate and operate. This year, we’re building on our commitment through products like Templok® Energy Saving Ceilings and Ultima® Low Embodied Carbon panels, which help reduce operational and material-related carbon in buildings. We know there is still progress to make, and we are focused on driving meaningful change that benefits the environment, our customers and the communities where we live and work.”
In alignment with its commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility, Armstrong World Industries’ 2025 Sustainability Report highlights key initiatives and progress around the company’s core sustainability pillars: Healthy and Circular Products, Healthy Planet and Thriving People and Communities. Key areas of focus include reducing the use of chemicals of concern in materials; launching the Ultima® Low Embodied Carbon (LEC) ceiling panels, which reduce material-related carbon emissions by 43% compared with standard Armstrong Ultima® ceiling panels; and further expanding the Templok® Energy Saving Ceilings portfolio, providing more options for customers to reduce energy costs and operational carbon in buildings.
The ranking was determined through a comprehensive analysis of data from both public and private companies operating in the U.S. To ensure the highest standards, only companies that meet the European Union's stringent sustainability criteria—considered the most advanced globally—were eligible.
