Key Terms

air-gapped technical
A system described as air-gapped is physically isolated from public and private networks so it cannot be reached over the internet or company LAN, like a safe kept in a room with no phone line. For investors this matters because air-gapping reduces the risk that critical data, trading algorithms, backups or industrial controls will be accessed or tampered with by hackers, but it can also increase costs and slow information flow compared with connected systems.
model-agnostic technical
An approach, tool, or test that works with any predictive or analytical model rather than depending on a single algorithm or vendor. For investors, model-agnostic methods let you compare, audit, and trust results across different forecasting systems—like using a universal charger that fits many phones—reducing reliance on one provider, making performance easier to validate, and lowering the risk that a single model’s quirks drive investment decisions.
multimodal technical
Multimodal describes an approach, product, or system that uses two or more different types of inputs, methods, or channels — for example combining text, images and audio in a technology product, or blending drugs, devices and therapy in medical care. For investors, multimodal solutions can broaden market reach and competitive differentiation but also add development cost, operational complexity and regulatory hurdles; think of it like a hybrid car that offers more capabilities but requires more parts and oversight.
dod cloud impact level (il) 6 technical
DoD Cloud Impact Level 6 (IL6) is a U.S. Department of Defense security classification that describes the controls a cloud service must meet to store and process certain types of sensitive government data. It signals that the cloud environment is designed for higher-assurance handling of controlled unclassified and mission-related information, so companies with IL6-authorized services can bid on or run workloads that require stricter security and compliance.
top secret/sci technical
Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) is a high-level government security classification indicating material that could cause exceptionally grave damage to national security if disclosed, with additional access controls that segment it into special compartments. Think of it as a bank vault with extra locked rooms where only cleared people with a specific key can enter; for investors, the label signals that contracts, programs, or personnel tied to that information are subject to strict secrecy, access limits, and regulatory oversight which can affect disclosure, timelines, and business risk.
bring-your-own-model technical
Bring-your-own-model describes a service or deployment approach where a customer supplies their own pretrained machine-learning model to run on a vendor’s infrastructure, tools, or application rather than using the vendor’s built-in model. Like bringing your own recipe to a restaurant’s kitchen, it lets companies keep custom code, data handling, or intellectual property while using another party’s computing, security, or integration features, which can affect costs, lock-in, compliance, and revenue models.

  • New air-gapped hardware brings secure, model-agnostic, multimodal AI beyond the cloud and into operational environments
  • Additional delivery option gives government customers more predictable costs and greater control over model usage to deploy agentic workloads
  • Ask Sage product brand will be phased out for Department of War customers in favor of a redesigned BigBear.ai generative AI platform to align with AI Acceleration Strategy

MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BigBear.ai (NYSE: BBAI), a specialized defense and security technology company providing mission-ready AI, today announced a significant expansion of its generative AI platform, introducing new capabilities designed to give Department of War (DoW) mission teams greater flexibility and control over where generative AI runs, how models are accessed, and how generative AI capabilities are procured. The expanded platform incorporates new air-gapped hardware, an additional delivery option, and flexible tenant configurations to support both cloud-connected deployments and fully local deployments in disconnected environments, making generative AI capabilities accessible to operators in more environments.

Combined, the new capabilities and delivery options support the Department’s AI Acceleration Strategy by extending secure generative AI capabilities into new operational environments at speed. Since the acquisition of Ask Sage, BigBear.ai has refactored and enhanced the underlying model-agnostic, multimodal generative AI platform and built a new technology portfolio around it. To give customers more control and flexibility, BigBear.ai is introducing new procurement and delivery options, including dedicated tenant environments that customers can white-label. As part of this transition, the Ask Sage product brand will be phased out for Department of War customers in favor of a redesigned BigBear.ai generative AI platform.

“The Department of War has set a clear objective: accelerate AI adoption and translate innovation into mission capability,” said Kevin McAleenan, Chief Executive Officer of BigBear.ai. “To us, delivering mission-ready AI means giving the customer control and flexibility, and building technology that works in the conditions operators face, including disconnected and air-gapped environments.”

BigBear.ai’s Generative AI Platform Includes Local Deployments up to Top Secret/SCI

To help DoW access the most advanced frontier models no matter where they need to be used, the expanded portfolio makes the platform’s enterprise capabilities, management tools, and agentic workflows available to mission operators through both cloud-connected and fully local deployments. Cloud-hosted configurations provide access to a broad catalog of AI models and support deployments up to DoD Cloud Impact Level (IL) 6. The new local device is designed for locally connected as well as air-gapped deployments up to Top Secret/SCI. When connected, users can access cloud-hosted models; when disconnected or air-gapped, locally hosted models provide continued access to the platform’s core generative AI capabilities without an external network connection.

Additional Delivery Option Gives More Control and Flexibility, Including “Bring-Your-Own-Model”

The additional delivery option separates secure workspace and platform licensing from model access. Customers that procure model capacity through their own agreements can license BigBear.ai’s integrated, multi-model platform directly, while those who prefer BigBear.ai to procure and manage model access can continue using its managed token-based option. Both approaches run on the same underlying platform for deployment, orchestration, tooling, and management.

“Mission needs have changed massively in the past six months. We have worked around the clock to build a set of capabilities that are designed to solve the day-to-day problems that our customers across DoW are facing, while advancing the Department’s AI Acceleration Strategy. We are deeply grateful to our customers for believing in the power of our model-agnostic platform and its ability to support operators in critical missions,” said Jason Layman, Executive Vice President of Generative AI Products and Platforms, BigBear.ai.

The air-gapped AI device will be demonstrated at the AFCEA TechNet Augusta event (August 17-20, 2026) and is available now. The ‘Bring-Your-Own-Model’ delivery option is expected to be available for dedicated tenants through BigBear.ai’s contract vehicles in approximately Q3 2026. Existing customers can continue using BigBear.ai’s current cloud deployments and managed token-based option.
