ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Science Corporation, the full-stack neural engineering and brain-computer interface (BCI) company focused on restoring and extending life, today announced the appointment of Nevada Sanchez as Executive Vice President of Engineering. Sanchez will provide engineering leadership across the organization and will report directly to Science CEO and co-founder Max Hodak.

Sanchez co-founded Butterfly Network, Inc. (NYSE: BFLY) in 2011, and until recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer. While there, he conceived and led the development of the world’s first ultrasound system on a chip, building the engineering organization that took the technology from a prototype to a globally deployed platform. His work helped establish Butterfly as a pioneer in semiconductor-based medical imaging.

The appointment comes after Science’s successful $230 million Series C capital raise, and as it begins the European commercial launch of PRIMA, its BCI retinal implant. Science is also accelerating development of its Biohybrid neural interface and Vessel perfusion programs, and expanding the Science Foundry, with its comprehensive MEMS fabrication capabilities.

Sanchez holds an S.B. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, an S.B. in Mathematics with a minor in Physics, and an M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT. He received the Henry Ford II Scholar Award, given to the top student in the MIT School of Engineering, and was named a Hertz Fellow before leaving academia to co-found Butterfly Network.

Science’s PRIMA retinal implant is the only treatment to have successfully restored form vision to clinical trial patients blinded by late-stage macular degeneration. The PRIMA clinical trial results were featured in The New England Journal of Medicine and on the cover of Time. PRIMA has received a CE (Conformité Européenne) mark under the European Union Medical Device Regulation from DEKRA, authorizing its commercial availability across 30 European countries. An FDA process is also underway.
