Key Terms

automated target recognition technical
A computer system that uses algorithms, pattern recognition and often machine learning to spot, classify and track objects of interest in sensor data (such as images, video, radar or sonar). Think of it like automated face recognition for machines: it scans large streams of data to flag items that match predefined shapes or behaviors. It matters to investors because the performance, accuracy and regulatory implications of this technology can influence sales, contracts, legal risk and competitive position for companies that develop or use it.
intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance technical
Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) are the activities and systems used to gather information about people, places and events—like a combination of watching with cameras and sensors, collecting clues, and making sense of them to know what is happening or likely to happen. Investors care because ISR drives demand for specialized equipment, software and services and affects national security spending and risk assessments; companies involved can see steady contracts, technology-driven growth, or heightened scrutiny depending on geopolitical developments.
battle damage detection technical
Systems and processes that identify, assess, and report damage to military platforms, equipment, or infrastructure after combat or hostile events. Like a car’s crash report and inspection combined with a quick photo and diagnostic scan, these tools help determine whether assets can be repaired, need replacement, or are permanently lost, which matters to investors because damage levels affect costs, insurance, readiness, and future procurement decisions.
ai-enabled object detection technical
AI-enabled object detection uses machine learning models to scan images or video and automatically find, classify, and locate items such as people, vehicles, products, or defects. Think of it as a smart pair of eyes that not only sees things in a picture but also labels and pins their positions. It matters to investors because it can change a company’s product capabilities, reduce manual work, enable new services, and affect competitive position and revenue potential.

Multiple US R & D contracts to advance customer automated target recognition capabilities and integrate battle damage detection into Gen-3 architecture

HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) won a series of U.S. R & D contracts to develop and field mission-critical Gen-3 AI solutions that enhance customers’ ability to conduct real-time, space-based tactical ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) operations.

“BlackSky continues to lead the commercial space-based intelligence industry by deploying proprietary, high-performance AI detection and identification algorithms directly into our customer’s classified mission environment,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky CEO. “Continued U.S. investments across BlackSky’s advanced, purpose-built space-based AI solutions reflect strong alignment between our technical roadmap and the nation’s current and future operational needs.”

“BlackSky’s commercial AI capabilities are adding machine speed to our customers’ space-based intelligence decision loop, compressing time and increasing the accuracy of strategic and tactical assessments, during live operations,” said O’Toole.

Under one contract BlackSky will leverage proven, high-performance AI-enabled object detection and identification algorithms to mature space-based automated target recognition capabilities within the customer’s classified workflow. BlackSky will also continue to develop AI-enabled Battle Damage Detection analytics as a feature of its commercial Gen-3 offering. Automated battle damage analytics help decision makers quickly evaluate the physical and functional damage inflicted on targets during military operations.

The Gen-3 constellation delivers industry-leading, best-in-class 35-centimeter imagery resolution with AI-driven analytics. The sharpness of imagery provides tactical visual clarity, reduces classification ambiguities, and reduces human analysts’ cognitive load. The entire Gen-3 constellation has consistently delivered images with remarkable clarity and uniform quality, detailing vehicles, maritime vessels, and aircraft of various sizes, as well as individual people and their shadows.
