open cut technical
"large-scale open cut and underground coal and manganese mines in Australia"
An open cut is a surface mining method where soil and rock are removed in layers from a large, exposed excavation to reach ore or minerals, similar to digging a giant, terraced hole in the ground rather than tunneling underground. For investors, it matters because open-cut operations typically allow higher production rates and lower extraction costs but can require large upfront capital, greater environmental controls, and long-term land rehabilitation — factors that affect project costs, timelines and risk.
