Key Terms

co-packaged optics technical
Co-packaged optics are optical components—lasers and fiber interfaces—physically packaged together with a network switch’s main processing chip so light-based data links sit much closer to the chip instead of traveling over long electrical traces. For investors, this matters because it can dramatically cut power use, boost data speed and density, and lower system costs in large data centers and telecom equipment, much like moving a power outlet next to a heavy appliance to avoid long, inefficient extension cords.
coherent transponders technical
Coherent transponders are devices used in high-speed fiber-optic networks that convert electrical data into light signals and back while capturing both the signal’s strength and its precise waveform (phase and amplitude). Like upgrading from hearing only how loud music is to also recognizing the tune, they let carriers send more data over the same fiber with better reach and flexibility, which matters to investors because they can lower operating costs, enable higher revenues from capacity upgrades, and extend the life of network infrastructure.
agentic AI technical
Agentic AI refers to computer systems that can make their own decisions and take actions without needing someone to tell them what to do each time. It's like giving a robot a degree of independence to solve problems or achieve goals on its own, which matters because it could change how we work and interact with technology in everyday life.
optical engine technical
An optical engine is the compact assembly of light sources, lenses and sensors that creates, shapes and reads optical signals—think of it as the “engine” that makes a device see and send information with light instead of electricity. Investors care because its performance, size, power use and manufacturing cost directly affect a product’s competitiveness, revenue potential and margins in markets like fiber communications, data centers, sensing and medical imaging.
digital twin technical
A digital twin is a live virtual replica of a physical asset, process, or system that mirrors real-world behavior using data and models so users can test changes, predict problems, and measure performance without touching the real thing. For investors, digital twins matter because they can lower maintenance costs, speed product development, improve uptime and reliability, and make future cash flows and risks easier to forecast — like using a flight simulator to safely train and tune a real airplane.
optical DCI technical
Optical DCI is the use of fiber‑optic cables and related equipment to link separate data centers so they can move very large amounts of data quickly and reliably. It matters to investors because faster, cheaper inter‑data‑center connections reduce operating costs and enable cloud services, backups and global scaling — like building high‑speed highways between warehouses — which affects demand for network gear, fiber providers and cloud or content businesses.
  • New developments in hyper-rail photonics, 1600ZR/ZR+ pluggables, full-spectrum coherent transponders and network automation
  • Recent introduction of Vesta 200 6.4T CPX optical engine from Nubis acquisition
  • Continuous innovation in highly dense, high-capacity optical solutions address AI demands of hyperscale and service provider networks

HANOVER, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) continues to strengthen its leadership in shaping the future of networking with new innovations designed to meet surging AI-driven bandwidth demands. Including recently acquired co-packaged/near-packaged optics and electrical redriver technologies from Nubis Communications, Ciena’s latest solutions support growing AI workload demands by significantly increasing network capacity and density.

“Ciena is building on our established leadership in high-capacity, low-latency optical networking with innovations that address the AI-driven transformation of networks,” said Dino DiPerna, Senior Vice President of Global Research & Development at Ciena. “Our latest advancements in hyper-rail photonics, 1600ZR/ZR+ pluggables, and agentic AI enabled automation drive high-speed connectivity and scalable capacity to support the increasing demands of next-generation AI workloads.”

Ciena’s new data center innovations to be featured at OFC 2026 (booth #1927) include:

  • Hyper-rail photonics: new amplifier configurations in collaboration with hyperscalers and service providers, that deliver up to 32x the density of today’s solutions or 128 fiber pairs in a single rack, reducing power consumption by up to 75% and space requirements by 85%
  • Next generation coherent technology: 2nm silicon designed to enable single-carrier 1.6 Tb/s coherent (1600ZR/1600ZR+) pluggables and full spectrum transponders that scale, simplify, and automate networks with higher capacity, more compact solutions
  • AI-driven network automation: Agentic AI capabilities powered by data-rich telemetry, featuring new agents for assurance, routing, and network digital twin validation, deliver exceptional operational efficiency and reliability

“The surge in AI workloads is creating unprecedented pressure within and between data centers, forcing a rethink of network architecture. According to our findings, demand for purpose-built optical DCI equipment will nearly double in the next five years,” said Jimmy Yu, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group. “In that period, cloud providers will implement new architectures such as scale-across to overcome space and power bottlenecks. Ciena’s new innovations in hyper-rail photonic systems, 1600ZR/ZR+ based on 2nm design, and full-spectrum transponders will help bridge the gap between the existing infrastructure and the higher-capacity, lower-latency demands of AI-driven applications.”

Ciena’s new innovations, which include 800 Gb/s C- and L-band coherent pluggables and photonic line systems optimized for scale across applications, and the recently announced Vesta 200 6.4T CPX flexible, open pluggable optical engine, will support hyperscaler and neoscaler efforts to scale their AI infrastructure.
