Key Terms

multi-gigabit technical
Multi-gigabit describes data transmission speeds that are several times faster than one gigabit per second, typically meaning network links or devices that can handle multiple gigabits of data each second. For investors, higher speeds are like widening a highway: they enable more users and services to run smoothly, support new bandwidth-hungry applications, and often signal demand for upgraded equipment and infrastructure that can drive revenue growth.
symmetrical internet technical
A symmetrical internet connection delivers the same upload and download speeds, like a two-way highway with equal lanes in each direction. For investors, this matters because businesses and cloud services pay premiums for reliable, fast uploads as well as downloads; companies that provide symmetrical service often serve high-value commercial customers, show steadier revenue from business contracts, and face different infrastructure and regulatory costs than providers focused only on consumer download speeds.
wifi technical
Wi-Fi is a technology that lets devices like phones, laptops, and sensors connect wirelessly to the internet and to each other over short distances, using radio signals instead of cables. For investors it matters because Wi‑Fi affects how products work, how businesses run and scale, and where revenue or costs may come from—think of it as the invisible roadway that enables digital services, office productivity, retail checkout and many internet‑connected devices to function reliably.
sd-wan technical
SD‑WAN is a technology that uses software to control and direct wide-area network traffic between offices, data centers and cloud services instead of relying solely on traditional hardware routers. Think of it as a smart traffic manager that chooses the fastest, cheapest or safest route for each data flow, improving performance, cutting telecom costs and simplifying upgrades. Investors care because it can lower operating expenses, enable faster cloud adoption and create steady demand for networking and security services.
cloud connectivity technical
Cloud connectivity is the ability of computers, devices, or business systems to link with remote computing services and data stored on the internet so they can send, receive, and process information. For investors it matters because strong, reliable cloud links let companies scale services, lower IT costs, support remote work or online products, and reduce downtime risk—similar to a dependable highway that lets goods move quickly and keeps customers satisfied.
unified communications technical
Unified communications is a set of tools and services that combine phone calls, video meetings, instant messaging, voicemail, and file sharing into a single, connected system so employees can communicate from one place—like a smartphone that brings all apps together. Investors care because it can lower communication costs, speed decision-making, improve customer response, and make a company more scalable and secure, all of which can affect productivity and profitability.
telehealth medical
Telehealth is the delivery of healthcare services and consultations remotely using video calls, phone, text messaging, or connected devices to monitor and transmit medical information. It matters to investors because it can reshape how patients access care, lower costs, and create new revenue streams or risks for healthcare providers, insurers and technology companies—similar to how online banking changed financial services—while also exposing businesses to reimbursement and regulatory shifts.
4k streaming technical
4k streaming is the delivery of video over the internet at roughly four times the detail of standard high-definition, typically about 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, producing a sharper, more lifelike picture. It matters to investors because it changes what viewers pay for and how much network capacity and storage providers must supply—think of it like upgrading from a small car to an SUV: it carries more value but consumes more fuel, affecting subscription revenue, advertising appeal, data costs, device sales and the infrastructure companies that support them.

More Than 2,300 Homes and Businesses Will Be Connected to America’s Smartest and Most Reliable Converged WiFi Network for the First Time

ONA, W.Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The first residents in Ona, West Virginia, are now connected to multi-gigabit, symmetrical Internet from Xfinity. This is a key milestone in the network expansion project that will connect more than 2,300 homes and businesses in Ona to America’s smartest and most reliable converged WiFi network.

As a new provider in town, Xfinity brings Internet, mobile, entertainment, and smart home services into one simple, seamless solution – giving customers more speed, savings, and control over their connected lives.

“We applaud Comcast for continuing to invest in the greater Huntington area and bringing the residents of Ona a new choice for Internet, mobile, and additional connectivity services,” said Megan Archer, President and CEO of the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Residents can visit Xfinity.com/mytown and enter their addresses to check for serviceability or additional details on construction timing. As construction continues, new homes and businesses will be connected in phases – with the entire project expected to be completed in 2027.

This expansion is part of Comcast’s latest investment in West Virginia, which also includes network expansion projects in:

  • Ceredo and Kenova – Construction is underway to connect more than 2,400 homes and businesses in Ceredo and Kenova. The full suite of Xfinity services – including Internet, mobile, entertainment, and smart home services – will be available to the first residents later this year.
  • Princeton – Construction is underway to connect more than 5,000 homes and businesses in Princeton, with Xfinity services already available to more than 2,000 residents.
  • Teays Valley – Construction is underway to connect more than 7,500 homes and businesses in the Teays Valley area, including communities in Hurricane and Scott Depot. Xfinity services are already available to thousands of residents.
  • Monongalia County – Construction is underway to connect more than 2,200 unserved and underserved homes and businesses in rural areas across Monongalia County. This expansion, in partnership with Monongalia County, will begin connecting its first customers later this year.

“We’re thrilled to begin connecting the first customers in Ona to our world‑class network,” said Ray Roundtree, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Beltway Region. “With our fast, reliable Internet, families and businesses can enjoy everything from streaming and gaming to remote work, telehealth, and more. We’re also proud to deliver exceptional value – including a five‑year price guarantee and a free line of Xfinity Mobile for a year with a qualifying Internet plan.”
