Insights

Cineverse's $2M+ box office performance from Toxic Avenger against under $5M investment signals promising multi-window revenue potential.

Cineverse's (NASDAQ: CNVS) acquisition of The Toxic Avenger appears to be generating solid financial returns across multiple distribution windows. The film has already grossed $2 million at the domestic box office against total acquisition, distribution, and marketing costs of less than $5 million. The critical metrics here are the multiple revenue streams and the perpetual rights ownership.

The company's North American rights "in all media and in perpetuity" represent a significant long-term asset. These rights allow Cineverse to capitalize on the IP across theatrical, physical media, digital storefronts, and eventually streaming platforms. The strong physical pre-orders (ranking as their #2 all-time film) are particularly notable in today's digital-first market, suggesting a dedicated fan base willing to pay premium prices for physical copies.

The film's dual release strategy (rated and unrated versions) maximizes potential audience reach while the 84% Rotten Tomatoes scores from both critics and audiences indicate positive word-of-mouth that should drive continued performance. What's most valuable here is how this property fits Cineverse's stated mission of showcasing indie creators while leveraging established franchises - an approach that typically requires lower capital investment while targeting passionate niche audiences with higher monetization potential per viewer.

Already the No. 2 Strongest Physical Preorder of all Time for Cineverse

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Cineverse (Nasdaq: CNVS), a next-generation entertainment studio, on a mission to showcase indie creators while bringing fans opportunities to enjoy their favorite movie franchises, has today announced that The Toxic Avenger Unrated is on pace to be one of the Company's most successful releases. This follows strong critical and fan reception, as demonstrated by the film's 84% scores by both on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following the acquisition, in all media and in perpetuity, of North American rights for Macon Blair's wild horror/comedy movie based on the Tromaverse's most iconic superhero, the wide release of The Toxic Avenger Unrated has already generated more than $2 million in gross domestic box office. Additionally, it is already Cineverse's all-time No. 2 film in terms of physical pre-orders, and is driving early excitement on digital storefronts with strong engagement and visibility.

The street date for physical and digital (both rated and unrated versions) will be announced following its theatrical run (buy tickets here).

Said Cineverse President and Chief Strategy Officer Erick Opeka, "This performance, following total acquisition, distribution and marketing costs of less than $5 million – is already on pace to be a very strong investment for us, and clearly the most profitable new film released this past weekend. This is a testament to the dedication of Toxie and Troma fans across the country."

Added Cineverse Chief Motion Pictures Officer Yolanda Macias, "We are humbled by every positive review we read and fan reaction we see on social (especially those who 'showed the **** up' in theatres dressed in character during what was otherwise a down Labor Day weekend vs. last year). They recognize the heart and soul poured into this film by amazing talent in front of and behind the camera – and as the film goes from theatrical to physical, digital and eventually streaming windows, we will continue to reach even bigger audiences that will no doubt fall in love with the superhero we need now."

The horror/comedy movie, written and directed by Blair (I Don't Feel At Home in This World Anymore, writer for Marvel Comics/Dark Horse Comics), is produced by Legendary Entertainment and distributed by Cineverse. Based on Troma Entertainment President and Co-founder Lloyd Kaufman's "THE TOXIC AVENGER" franchise, which first debuted four decades ago, the new film features an all-star cast including Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon (Footloose, Hollow Man), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings franchise), Jacob Tremblay (Room, Wonder), and Taylour Paige (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Zola).

When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze (Dinklage), is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he's transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.

Cineverse's U.S. theatrical distribution partner for the film is Iconic Events Releasing, and Canadian is VVS. For more information, visit https://tickets.toxicavenger.com/
