SWEP, a Dover (NYSE: DOV) company and leading supplier of brazed plate heat exchangers, has opened a new propane testing facility at its R&D Center in Landskrona, Sweden. The facility enables testing of up to XL-size units, expanding from their previous small- and medium-sized testing capabilities established in 2019.

This development responds to increasing market demand for natural and low-GWP refrigerant systems, driven by policies like the European F-Gas Regulation. The new test rig is designed for wide propane envelope testing and will support the development of heat exchangers optimized for next-generation heat pumps and chillers.

The facility is part of SWEP's Global Investment Program (2019-2025), focusing on expanding capacity and capabilities while ensuring operational safety due to propane's flammable properties.

Insights

The opening of SWEP's large-scale propane testing facility represents a strategic positioning in the evolving HVAC market, particularly as regulations push for natural refrigerants. While testing facilities don't directly generate revenue, this infrastructure investment is important for Dover's long-term competitiveness in the $180 billion global HVAC market.

The facility's timing aligns with the European F-Gas Regulation implementation, giving SWEP a competitive advantage in product development for next-generation heat pumps. The expansion from small/medium to XL-size unit testing capabilities indicates Dover's commitment to capturing market share in larger industrial applications. However, the return on this investment will likely materialize over 3-5 years as new products are developed and commercialized.

For investors, this development strengthens Dover's position in the sustainable HVAC segment but isn't likely to impact near-term financials significantly. Think of it as planting seeds for future growth rather than immediate harvest.

The investment timing is strategically aligned with major regulatory shifts, particularly the EU's F-Gas Regulation phase-down schedule. This positions Dover ahead of competitors as the market transitions away from high-GWP refrigerants. The propane (R290) testing capability is especially relevant as it has a GWP of just 3, compared to traditional refrigerants with GWPs in the thousands.

The facility's focus on XL-size units targets the commercial and industrial HVAC segment, where the transition to natural refrigerants faces the most technical challenges and, consequently, offers higher margins. The safety considerations for propane testing demonstrate compliance with stringent EU safety standards, reducing regulatory risks.

In simpler terms, Dover is preparing for a future where environmentally harmful refrigerants will be banned, giving them a head start in testing and developing products that will soon become the industry standard.

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., Dec. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- SWEP, part of Dover (NYSE: DOV) and a world-leading supplier of brazed plate heat exchangers (BPHEs), today announced the opening of a new rig for propane testing at the SWEP Research & Development Center in Landskrona, Sweden.

Recent policies such as the European F-Gas Regulation are driving market demand for heating and cooling systems that operate with natural- or low-GWP refrigerants. The capability to run large scale propane testing is an important step for SWEP to meet current and future need for sustainable heat transfer solutions. The heating and cooling sector (HVAC) accounts for a significant share of global energy consumption, and the industry is challenged to find innovations to accelerate decarbonization.

"The new test rig will be crucial in the development of brazed plate heat exchangers that are optimized for systems based on natural refrigerants. We are working closely with our customers to create products that meet system design requirements of next-generation heat pumps and chillers," says Ulrika Nordqvist, SWEP President.

SWEP has been able to test small- and medium-sized units with propane since 2019, and the new rig will now enable in-house testing of up to XL-size units.

"The new test rig is optimized for a wide propane envelope and will be instrumental in the ongoing development of highly efficient and safe heat transfer solutions. We will continue to support our customers in the transition towards more sustainable heating and cooling systems," says Fabienne Bourquenoud Moret, VP of Marketing, Research & Development at SWEP.

Although propane gas has a low GWP, its flammable properties make it hazardous to handle in a test environment. Ensuring operational safety and quality has been central in the launch of the new rig, which is part of SWEP's Global Investment Program. Running from 2019 through 2025, the program seeks to strengthen SWEP's long-term capacity and add new capabilities to help ensure customer success and accelerate growth.
