HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Hartford, a leading disability insurer and 30-year advocate of the adaptive sports movement, partnered with CUNY’s Adaptive Sports Program to host a youth wheelchair basketball clinic featuring World Champion Wheelchair Basketball Player Matt Scott on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Hartford along with Scott and John Starks, New York Knicks Legend, surprised 28 youth athletes with custom-fit sport wheelchairs. “We are on a mission to increase participation in adaptive sports by making sports and equipment more accessible to youth and adult athletes,” said The Hartford’s Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Claire Burns. “Adaptive athletes pay approximately 15 times more for equipment than non-adaptive athletes and we are committed to helping remove cost as a barrier to participation. We are proud to partner with CUNY as they set a new standard for diversity and inclusion in college sports.”

In addition to the wheelchair donations, The Hartford contributed $150,000 to CUNY for hosting the wheelchair basketball clinic. During the event, Scott competed in a free throw contest in which The Hartford contributed $1,000 for every basket made for a total donation of $50,000 to Matt Scott’s Fly Without Limits Organization.

CUNY’s wheelchair basketball program, which began competitive play in 2019, is the only program of its kind on the eastern seaboard. Their dedicated disability services professionals, faculty and student leaders have transformed CUNY into a first-choice destination for New Yorkers with disabilities to pursue a college education.

“We are thankful to The Hartford for their generous support of the next generation of student-athletes with disabilities as well as CUNY’s Adaptive Sports Program,” said CUNY Chancellor Felix Matos Rodríguez. “CUNY is proud of our adaptive sports program, led by director Ryan Martin, who is a national pacesetter in the adaptive athletics space. We are one of only 12 Universities nationwide to offer competitive, intercollegiate adaptive sports.”

This event builds on The Hartford’s mission to make adaptive sports more accessible. Earlier this year, the company announced a $3.5 million commitment to Move United, the national leader in community adaptive sports. Over the past five years, The Hartford has donated more than 5,000 pieces of adaptive sports equipment in more than 40 communities across the country, positively impacting more than 40,000 people.
