Key Terms

4 terms
gross written premium financial
"we expect to achieve our $2 billion gross written premium target in 2027"
Gross written premium is the total value of insurance policies a company has sold during a period, measured before any cancellations, refunds or transfers to other insurers are taken out. Think of it as the company’s topline sales number for insurance, like a store reporting total receipts before returns — it shows scale and sales momentum and helps investors gauge growth, market share and potential exposure to claims.
fronting carrier financial
"Hippo will serve as a fronting carrier for more than $500 million in annual gross written premiums"
A fronting carrier is an insurance company that formally issues a policy and handles regulatory paperwork, while passing most or all of the actual financial risk to another insurer or a captive through reinsurance. Think of it as the visible ticket seller who publishes the ticket but hands off the crowd-control and cost of refunds to a partner; investors watch fronting arrangements because they affect which firms actually carry the loss exposure, capital needs, and counterparty risk.
specialty insurance financial
"a data-driven risk exchange platform for the specialty insurance market"
Insurance written for unusual, high-risk, or highly specialized exposures that standard policies won’t cover, often designed case-by-case for industries, events or assets with unique risks. Think of it as a tailor-made safety net rather than an off-the-rack policy; it matters to investors because these products carry different pricing, profit margins and loss volatility, so they can significantly affect an insurer’s earnings, capital needs and growth prospects.
reinsurance financial
"expanded distribution and reinsurance connectivity directly to Accelerant's Risk Capital Partners"
Reinsurance is when insurance companies buy insurance for themselves to protect against very big losses. It’s like a car owner getting extra coverage from another company so that if there's a serious accident, the financial hit isn’t all on one company. This helps insurance companies stay stable and able to pay out when disasters happen.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures.

Adjusted Net Income is a non-GAAP financial measure. Hippo defines adjusted net income as net income excluding the impact of certain items that may not be indicative of underlying business trends, operating results, or future outlook, net of tax impact, including depreciation and amortization, stock-based compensation, fair value adjustments, and other one-off transactions. Hippo does not provide forward-looking guidance for net income (loss) on a GAAP basis, and does not provide a quantitative reconciliation of the forward-looking Adjusted Net Income guidance set forth above to net income (loss), because certain reconciling items — in particular fair value adjustments, other one-off transactions, and related tax effects — cannot be predicted or reliably estimated without unreasonable effort and may be significant to GAAP results.
