Rhea-AI Summary
Ivanhoe Electric (IE) released a 2026 Preliminary Feasibility Study for its 100%-owned Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona, outlining a high‑grade underground mine and heap leach operation with strong projected economics.
The study estimates $1.43 billion in initial capital, life‑of‑mine C1 cash costs of $1.47/lb and all‑in sustaining costs of $2.28/lb, with a life‑of‑mine copper grade of 1.08%. At a base copper price of $4.75/lb, after‑tax NPV8% is $1.5 billion, IRR is 19% and payback is 4.8 years; at the current COMEX spot of $6.79/lb, after‑tax NPV8% rises to $3.5 billion and IRR to 30%. Average annual copper cathode production over the first 15 years is projected at about 75,000 tonnes (74,722 t/y) within a 24‑year mine life and total cathode output of 1.4 million tonnes.
The project uses a purpose‑built Robbins Crossover TBM for a 4 km decline, targets first cathode in 2029, and benefits from full key local permits and a Preliminary Project Letter from US EXIM for potential debt funding of up to $1.1 billion, while 3.3 million tonnes of inferred copper resources support future expansion potential.

Study Supports Ongoing Project Financing Activities
The 2026 Preliminary Feasibility Study builds on the 2025 Preliminary Feasibility Study and provides the necessary engineering studies to support the Company's current project financing activities. Ivanhoe Electric is in advanced discussions on multiple project financing alternatives, including an application with the Export-Import Bank of the United States ("US EXIM") under the Make More in America initiative. On August 24, Ivanhoe Electric announced receipt of a Preliminary Project Letter ("PPL") from US EXIM for potential debt funding of up to
The 2026 Study Incorporates the Purpose-Built Robbins Crossover XRE Tunnel Boring Machine
Ivanhoe Electric announced its intention to acquire the TBM and material handling system from The Robbins Company of Solon, Ohio, in May 2026. The TBM is designed to operate through the hard-rock, wet and mixed-face ground conditions expected during decline development at Santa Cruz. Its earth-pressure-balance capability controls face stability and helps mitigate groundwater inflow, while the bi-directional cutterhead and high-torque, high-speed drive are designed to manage changing geological conditions in a single drive.
During excavation, the TBM system will install a continuous, fully supported and sealed segmental steel-reinforced concrete lining. The completed flat-bottomed decline will form permanent life-of-mine infrastructure and will contain an integrated conveyor system used first for excavated development material and later enhanced for ore handling during production.

High Grade Oxide and Chalcocite Mineral Reserves Support a 24-Year Mine Life
The Study includes a Mineral Reserve Estimate for the Santa Cruz Copper Project, including Probable Reserves for the Santa Cruz and East Ridge Deposits.
Only high-grade copper mineralization from the Oxide and Chalcocite domains of the Santa Cruz and East Ridge Deposits are included in the current Mineral Reserves.
Table 4. Santa Cruz Copper Project Mineral Reserves summary
| Deposit | Classification | Tonnes (thousand tonnes) | Total Copper (%) | Contained Copper (thousand tonnes) |

| East Ridge | Probable | 4,107 | 1.03 | 42 |
| Total | Probable | 140,129 | 1.08 | 1,519 |
Notes on Mineral Reserves: 1. The Mineral Reserves in this estimate are current to September 23, 2026, and were independently prepared, including estimation and classification, by BBA Consultants USA LP. They are reported in accordance with the definitions for Mineral Reserves in S-K 1300. 2. The point of reference for the estimate is the point of delivery to the process facilities. 3. The Mineral Reserves for the Santa Cruz and East Ridge deposits were completed using Deswik mining software. Mineral Reserves are defined within stope designs that are prescribed by rock mechanics, considering the specific characteristics of deposits, mineral domains, mining methods, and the mining sequence. Transverse longhole stoping is the optimal mining method with uppers and cut & fill methods used where appropriate. Mining will occur in blocks, extracting ore from the bottom upwards, with paste backfill providing ground support to sustain a production rate of 20,000 tonnes per day for the first 15 years of operation. 4. Mineral Reserves are estimated at an NSR cutoff value of US

What are the key projected operating metrics for the Santa Cruz Copper Project?
The 2026 study outlines a 24‑year mine life with 140 million tonnes of reserve ore at a 1.08% copper grade, daily throughput of 15,346 tonnes (20,030 tonnes in the first 15 years), and life‑of‑mine copper recovery of 92.3%. Total copper cathode production is estimated at 1.4 million tonnes, with average annual production of 58,385 tonnes over the life of mine and 74,722 tonnes over the first 15 years.
How sensitive are Santa Cruz’s economics to different copper prices?
At $4.00/lb copper, the project generates after‑tax life‑of‑mine free cash flow of $3.9 billion, after‑tax NPV8% of $0.8 billion and IRR of 14%. At the $4.75/lb base case, after‑tax free cash flow is $5.6 billion, NPV8% is $1.5 billion and IRR is 19%. At $6.00/lb, after‑tax NPV8% increases to $2.7 billion with a 26% IRR, and at the $6.79/lb spot price, after‑tax free cash flow reaches $10.2 billion, NPV8% $3.5 billion and IRR 30%.
What is the planned development and production timeline at Santa Cruz?
The project is transitioning into early construction. Early site preparation and development activities have begun, box cut development is expected to start in October 2026, and TBM decline development is targeted for Summer 2027. The company targets first copper cathode production in 2029, with the after‑tax payback period measured from the start of operations that year.
What permits and land position support the Santa Cruz Copper Project?
The project sits on approximately 5,975 acres of private land near Casa Grande, Arizona, including surface, mineral and associated water rights. All necessary city, county and state permits have been obtained to advance surface construction, complete the box cut and commence TBM decline development. The planned surface footprint is less than 1,600 acres, leaving room on the private land package for future expansion.
How will the Robbins Crossover Tunnel Boring Machine be used at Santa Cruz?
The purpose‑built Robbins Crossover XRE TBM is designed to drive a single decline approximately 4 km long and 9.3 m in diameter through variable ground conditions. During excavation it will install a fully supported, sealed segmental steel‑reinforced concrete lining. The completed flat‑bottom decline will form permanent life‑of‑mine access and house an integrated conveyor system, first for development rock and later upgraded for ore handling.
What factors drove changes in capital and operating costs compared with the 2025 PFS?
Initial capital increased from $1,236 million in the 2025 PFS to $1,426 million in the 2026 study, driven by approximately 8% cost escalation from inflation, additional mine development capital for advanced ventilation shaft and TBM access engineering, and changes in solvent extraction and electrowinning construction scope plus indirect costs and contingency. Higher C1 and all‑in‑sustaining costs reflect inflation in consumables, power and labor, a higher binder requirement in paste backfill, and increased sustaining capital to access additional reserve tonnes.
What additional resource and expansion potential exists beyond the current mine plan?
Across the Santa Cruz, East Ridge and Texaco deposits, there are 3.3 million tonnes of contained copper in inferred mineral resources that are not part of the current PFS mine plan. The Texaco deposit remains open in several directions, and use of the Robbins Crossover TBM is described as providing enhanced options for phased expansion, particularly at the high‑grade Texaco area.
