Itron and the City of Helsingborg Collaborate to Create a Smart, Sustainable and Data-Driven City
Rhea-AI Summary
Itron (NASDAQ: ITRI) has announced a collaboration with the City of Helsingborg, Sweden, to implement smart city solutions through its CityEdge portfolio. The initial phase involves deploying 670 Itron Networked Lighting Controllers (NLCs) as part of the city's 30,000 streetlight network modernization plan.
The project, set to begin in early 2025, aligns with Helsingborg's Action Plan for Street Lighting and IoT 2021-2027. The CityEdge central management software will enable remote control and monitoring of streetlights, featuring intelligent dimming capabilities based on time and traffic volume. The system includes outage alerts for maintenance crews, accessible via web and mobile platforms.
This implementation supports Nordic Innovation's vision of making the Nordic region the world's most sustainable integrated region by 2030. The CityEdge platform's open ecosystem can accommodate various smart city applications beyond lighting, including traffic management, public safety, and environmental monitoring.
Positive
- Secured contract with Helsingborg for initial deployment of 670 smart lighting controllers
- Platform's open ecosystem enables multiple revenue streams beyond lighting
- Project aligns with regional sustainability initiatives, potentially leading to expanded opportunities
- Already implemented in 500+ communities globally, demonstrating strong market acceptance
Negative
- Initial phase covers only 670 of 30,000 streetlights, indicating initial revenue impact
- Project implementation doesn't start until early 2025, delaying revenue recognition
Insights
Itron's partnership with Helsingborg represents a strategic expansion of their CityEdge portfolio in Europe, though the initial deployment encompasses just 670 controllers of a potential 30,000 streetlight opportunity. This incremental approach is typical in smart city implementations, with initial deployments serving as proof-of-concept before broader rollout.
The deal's timing aligns perfectly with Helsingborg's 2021-2027 Action Plan and Nordic Innovation's 2030 sustainability goals, positioning Itron to capture long-term value beyond the initial implementation. The most significant aspect is the platform's extensibility - Itron is establishing the infrastructure foundation that can support numerous additional revenue-generating use cases across traffic management, public safety, and environmental monitoring.
While financial terms weren't disclosed, Itron's strategic positioning within Helsingborg's long-term modernization efforts suggests this represents more than just a one-time hardware sale. The recurring software component via the CityEdge central management platform provides ongoing revenue potential. Importantly, success in Helsingborg could serve as a reference case for other Nordic municipalities pursuing similar sustainability initiatives.
This deployment reinforces Itron's leadership in the networked solutions sector, with the company noting the platform has been adopted in over 500 communities globally. Each new implementation strengthens Itron's position in the competitive smart city market while expanding its geographical footprint in Europe.
City to Deploy Itron’s CityEdge Portfolio to Improve Streetlight Operations and Provide Insights
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash., March 25, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), which is innovating new ways for utilities and cities to manage energy and water, is working together with the City of Helsingborg in Sweden to deploy Itron’s CityEdge portfolio as the initial phase of the city’s project to create a smart and sustainable city. To accomplish its project goals, the City of Helsingborg, which has just over 150,000 residents, will deploy Itron Networked Lighting Controllers (NLCs) on the initial phase of their 30,000 streetlights, and various sensors throughout the city which utilize Itron’s world leading central management software.
As part of the City of Helsingborg’s Action Plan for Street Lighting and IoT 2021-2027, the city is upgrading its lighting system and modernizing its operations with more energy-efficient and smarter solutions. With Itron’s CityEdge central management software and the initial 670 Itron NLCs embedded with wireless communications, the city can remotely control and monitor its streetlights, creating a modernized, energy-efficient solution. Deployment is projected to kick off in early 2025.
Using the intelligent dimming feature of the NLCs, the city can adjust the brightness of the streetlight based on the time of day and/or traffic volume, helping to increase the safety of the community and creating better visibility at night. Additionally, the smart streetlights have outage alarms that alert the maintenance crews of streetlight outages via the CityEdge platform software, which can be accessed through the web and/or mobile device.
Deployment of the Itron solution aligns with Nordic Innovation, an organization under the Nordic Council of Ministers that supports the prime ministers’ vision that the Nordic region will become the most sustainable integrated region in the world by 2030. As the CityEdge platform is an open ecosystem, the platform can support a range of smart city devices and use cases. Beyond smart lighting, it can support a variety of use-cases within several domains, including traffic and highways, public safety, environmental and sustainability and energy. With a plethora of supported use cases, the City of Helsingborg can leverage the Itron solution to support the Nordic Innovation in its vision to become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030.
“The City of Helsingborg was named one of Europe’s most innovative cities in 2020. Upgrading our streetlight operations is an important step on our journey towards an even more innovative city.
