The introduction of Knowles Precision Devices' latest Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) modules represents a significant advancement in energy storage technology, particularly for industries that demand high performance and reliability. The mention of a three-cell package indicates a move towards higher operating voltages and space efficiency, which can be a game-changer in applications such as renewable energy, automotive and IoT.

From a market perspective, the ability to offer a product that combines higher voltage ratings with internal cell balancing could position Knowles as a compelling choice for businesses looking to enhance their energy storage solutions. The reported cost-effectiveness and performance benefits, such as low self-discharge rates and high energy density, are likely to resonate with customers prioritizing total cost of ownership and operational efficiency.

Moreover, the long operating life and durability of over 500,000 charge/discharge cycles could contribute to a lower replacement frequency, potentially leading to sustained revenue streams from long-term customer relationships. This durability also aligns with the increasing focus on sustainability and reduced electronic waste.

The announcement by Knowles Corporation about their new supercapacitors could have a tangible impact on their financial performance. The integration of high-quality components from the acquired Cornell Dubilier brand and the subsequent launch of a superior product line may lead to an increase in market share within the capacitor industry.

Investors should note the potential for revenue growth driven by the adoption of these supercapacitors in various high-growth sectors. The energy storage market, for instance, is expanding rapidly and Knowles' entry with a differentiated product could capture significant market interest. Additionally, the operational benefits touted by the new supercapacitors, such as space savings and higher operating voltages, could lead to increased demand and potentially higher margins due to product differentiation.

However, it is crucial to monitor the adoption rate of these new modules and the competitive landscape. While the product features are promising, the actual impact on Knowles' financials will depend on market acceptance and the ability to scale production to meet potential demand.

The technological implications of Knowles' new three-cell supercapacitors are noteworthy. Supercapacitors are essential for applications requiring quick charge and discharge cycles and the advancements in voltage rating and energy density could make these new modules highly sought after for cutting-edge applications.

The mention of internal cell balancing is particularly interesting, as it implies a more reliable and safer product, reducing the risk of cell overvoltage. This feature is not just a technical enhancement but also a production advantage, potentially reducing the time and cost associated with manufacturing.

Furthermore, the wide operating temperature ranges and low equivalent series resistance (ESR) are critical for applications that operate under extreme conditions. These specifications suggest that Knowles has prioritized not only the performance but also the adaptability of their supercapacitors to diverse environments, which is crucial for the robustness required in industrial and automotive applications.

Three-cell devices offer greater energy potential and power output than single or dual-cell parts

CAZENOVIA, N.Y., March 11, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Knowles Precision Devices, a segment of Knowles Corporation (NYSE: KN), a leading global supplier of high performance components and solutions, today announced its latest Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC), or supercapacitor, modules are now available. Based on Knowles' Cornell Dubilier brand DGH and DSF Series supercapacitors, these cutting-edge capacitors use a three-cell package for higher operating voltages and printed circuit board space savings.

Knowles Corporation acquired Cornell Dubilier in 2023 to expand its offering of high-quality film, electrolytic and mica capacitors. Like other supercapacitors offered by Knowles' Cornell Dubilier brand, the new devices provide very fast power discharge that cannot be matched by conventional capacitors or batteries. That large capacity makes it possible to support brief power interruptions, supplement batteries, or even be used in place of batteries in many applications. These supercapacitors are ideal for applications including solar and wind energy harvesting, mechanical actuators, AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles), EV transportation power, smart utility meters, IoT, pulse battery pack alternatives, memory backup, battery/capacitor hybrids, UPS systems, emergency lighting, LED power, solar lighting or anywhere that significant energy storage is needed.

The new supercapacitors offer a notable jump in voltage rating over typical radial-mount supercapacitors, up to 9.0 WVDC. A key feature of the DGH and DSF Series additions is the unique three-cell radial-leaded package. Compared to single or dual-cell supercapacitors, the compact design saves space and allows for much higher operating voltages, making them ideal for a wider range of applications. Both series include capacitance values from 0.33 to 5 Farads. Multiple devices can be banked for even higher capacitance or voltage.

Another notable advantage of these supercapacitors is their internal cell balancing. This feature ensures optimal performance and serves as a production time saver. DGH and DSF Series three-cell supercapacitors are also more cost-effective than other options currently available.

From a performance standpoint, both series offer high energy density and extremely low self-discharge rates, benefiting energy storage applications. Both series are also tolerant of wide-ranging operational environments, with operating temperature ranges from -40 °C to +65 °C for DGH 8.1V/DSF 9.0V and -40 °C to +85 °C for DGH 6.9V/DSF 7.5V. Low equivalent series resistance (ESR) minimizes energy loss for high efficiency. ESR varies by part but is lower than most capacitors with similar storage capabilities. These supercapacitors are designed to withstand over 500,000 charge/discharge cycles, ensuring long-lasting performance without performance degradation. Operating life is expected to be up to 10 years.
