Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Key Terms

earnings per share, non-gaap financial measures, return on invested capital, adverse actuarial adjustments
4 terms
earnings per share financial
"basic and diluted earnings per share (“EPS”) of $1.42"
Earnings per share represent the amount of profit a company makes for each share of its stock, similar to how a pie’s total size can be divided into slices for each person. It helps investors understand how profitable the company is on a per-share basis, making it easier to compare its performance over time or against other companies. Higher earnings per share generally indicate better profitability and can influence a company's stock value.
View in glossary
non-gaap financial measures financial
"may be deemed non-GAAP financial measures: variable contribution and variable contribution margin"
Non-GAAP financial measures are numbers companies use to show their financial performance that exclude certain expenses or income. They help investors see how the company might perform without one-time costs or other unusual items, giving a different perspective from official reports. However, since they can be adjusted, they don’t always tell the full story and should be looked at alongside standard financial figures.
return on invested capital financial
"Return on invested capital, representing net income divided by the sum"
A percentage that shows how effectively a company turns the money invested in its business—both borrowed funds and shareholders’ equity—into operating profit after taxes. It tells investors whether a company earns more from its core operations than it costs to fund those operations; think of it like the annual return you’d expect from renovating a rental property—higher percentages mean the company uses capital more efficiently and is more likely to create value for shareholders.
adverse actuarial adjustments financial
"Approximately $13.0 million, or $0.29 per share, of adverse actuarial adjustments"
An increase in estimated future insurance or pension liabilities that results from a change in actuarial assumptions, methods, or experience and therefore produces a negative adjustment to a company’s actuarial valuation. These adjustments arise when new data or revised assumptions (for example about mortality, morbidity, claim frequency or severity, discount rates, or cost trends) cause actuaries to raise the measured obligation or reserve; they typically increase reported liabilities and reduce reported income or surplus on the period’s financial statements, but do not necessarily reflect an immediate cash outflow.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Landstar System, Inc. (NASDAQ: LSTR) (“Landstar” or the “Company”) today reported its financial results for the 2026 third quarter. The Company reported total revenue of $1.512 billion in the 2026 third quarter, an increase of 25% as compared to revenue of $1.205 billion in the 2025 third quarter, and basic and diluted earnings per share (“EPS”) of $1.42 in the 2026 third quarter, an increase of 154% as compared to EPS of $0.56 in the 2025 third quarter. It should be noted that EPS in the 2025 third quarter was negatively impacted by non-cash impairment charges of $30.1 million, or $0.66 per share, related to the previously disclosed strategic review of operations conducted during the 2025 third quarter, and, as further described below, the 2026 third quarter EPS was negatively impacted by highly elevated insurance and claim costs. The Company also reported a 14% increase in gross profit and a 25% increase in variable contribution (defined as revenue less the cost of purchased transportation and commissions to agents) in the 2026 third quarter, as compared in each case to the 2025 third quarter.

“The Landstar team of independent business owners and employees excelled in a freight transportation backdrop that continues to improve. Our network generated truck revenue of $1.407 billion, an increase of 29% compared to the 2025 third quarter, with revenue generated via van and unsided/platform equipment each increasing over 30% compared to the 2025 third quarter,” said Landstar President and Chief Executive Officer Frank Lonegro. “In addition, I was highly encouraged to see our net 165 Business Capacity Owner (BCO) truck additions during the third quarter, the strongest quarterly improvement since the third quarter of 2021. We are continuing to deliver safety, security and service for our customers, and our BCOs achieved a 5% year-over-year improvement in DOT accident frequency. Even so, we are not immune to the challenges of the insurance and claims inflation prevalent in our industry.”
