MSCI Launches SignalLab Giving Investment Teams Access to Trusted and Integrated Signals
MSCI (MSCI) has launched SignalLab, a platform bringing investment signals and tools for testing and deployment into one environment.
Sentiment and the balance of points
Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.
New platform brings together AI enabled risk premia and micro-industries, factors and crowding
Currently the proliferation of data and signals from vendors with different quality standards, methodologies, investment universes and security identifiers, makes them hard to compare and complicates onboarding for investment teams. SignalLab addresses this challenge by bringing together high-quality signals that are standardized, validated and documented on one platform backed by MSCI's data and infrastructure.
Today, teams either build signals internally, which can be a slow and resource-intensive process, or assemble them across different providers. SignalLab gives investment teams access to a governed library of ready-to-use signals on one platform with the option to bring their own proprietary data into the same environment.
The platform draws on more than 50 years of MSCI factor research and the data infrastructure behind MSCI’s indexes and Barra models. SignalLab spans four areas that are updated daily, covering more than 600 research-grade signals and offering global coverage:
- Risk Premia: signals grounded in economic and financial literature. An AI agent analyzes the research and translates it into tested, scored signals, which are then validated by an MSCI researcher.
- Micro-Industries: granular classification of companies built using AI. A proprietary language model powers the initial clustering, while large language models refine definitions and assign stocks, with the resulting outputs validated by MSCI’s model validation team.
- MSCI's existing FactorLab and Crowding signals.
The platform is expected to evolve with the addition of new signals and data modules designed to support signal customization and the integration of data into MSCI’s index and risk model production environments.
Future modules will include:
- Fundamental Momentum: trends in a company’s earnings, margins, profitability and analyst revisions.
- AI Exposure Intelligence: a classification system tracking how AI is reshaping company value taking into consideration current AI revenue, competitive positioning and disruption risk.
“Our clients tell us the hard part isn’t necessarily finding a signal but proving that the signal is trustworthy and additive to their investment process,” said Mark Carver, Global Head of Equity Solutions and Equity Analytics at MSCI. “SignalLab was born out of client demand and gives clients the confidence, speed and control they need to test ideas through history, gain transparency to the risk across their portfolios and complement their existing investment models.”
