Key Terms

battery energy storage system (bess) technical
A battery energy storage system (BESS) is a large-scale setup that stores electricity in rechargeable batteries and releases it when needed, like a giant rechargeable battery for the power grid. It matters to investors because it helps smooth out supply and demand, capture surplus renewable power, provide backup and short-term grid services that can earn recurring revenue, and can boost the value of generation and transmission assets as demand for flexible energy grows.
front-of-the-meter technical
Assets or equipment located on the utility side of an electricity meter that serve the wider power grid or multiple customers rather than a single household or business. Investors care because these projects (like large batteries, solar farms or grid-connected generators) compete in wholesale power markets, follow utility rules and can scale revenue through contracts or market sales; think of them as a shared highway serving many users instead of a private driveway.
vehicle-to-grid (v2g) technology technical
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology lets electric vehicles act like mobile batteries by sending electricity from their batteries back into the power grid as well as charging from it. Think of a parked EV as a shared home battery that can supply power during peak demand or store excess renewable energy. For investors, V2G can create new revenue streams, change electricity demand patterns, and require investment in charging infrastructure and grid upgrades, affecting utilities, automakers, and energy services.
nuvve give™ platform technical
A software platform that connects electric vehicles and chargers to the power grid, coordinates when and how they send or store electricity, and manages the related payments, credits or donations. Investors should care because it turns parked EVs into small, controllable energy assets—similar to renting out spare storage on your phone—creating new revenue streams, recurring service fees and potential value from environmental credits or grid services.
supply and demand adjustment market regulatory
A supply and demand adjustment market is one in which prices, quantities available, and trading activity change in response to shifts in how much of an asset sellers offer and how much buyers want. Think of it like a thermostat that raises or lowers temperature until a room feels balanced; for investors, these adjustments drive price moves, affect how quickly holdings can be sold, influence revenue and inventory expectations for companies, and signal changing risk and opportunity.
japan electric power exchange (jepx) regulatory
Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) is the organized wholesale marketplace where electricity generators, utilities and retailers buy and sell power, and where spot and forward electricity prices are set through trading and auctions. It matters to investors because those prices influence utility and energy-company revenues, the cost of power for factories and services, and the economics of energy projects—much like a farmer’s market sets wholesale prices that ripple through retail costs and business profits.
operations and maintenance (o&m) technical
Operations and maintenance (O&M) are the routine tasks and services needed to keep a physical asset or facility running reliably, such as staffing, inspections, repairs, spare parts, utilities and regulatory compliance. For investors, O&M determines the ongoing cash cost, affects how long the asset lasts and how often it breaks down, and therefore directly influences operating profit, cash flow forecasts and the risk of unexpected expenses—like regular car servicing that prevents costly roadside failures.
aggregation services technical
Aggregation services collect and combine data, documents, or transactions from many different sources into a single, organized feed or platform—think of a mailbox that gathers and sorts mail from multiple senders so you see everything in one place. They matter to investors because they speed up research and decision-making, reduce manual errors, and can lower costs or create new revenue streams, while also introducing dependence on data quality and a single service provider.
