Key Terms

digital lidar technical
Digital lidar is a way of measuring distances and building 3D maps by sending pulses of laser light and recording the returns with electronic detectors and processors, producing a digital ‘point cloud’ that represents an object or environment like a 3D photo. For investors it matters because digital designs (using solid-state sensors and software) can lower cost, improve reliability and scale more easily than mechanical systems, affecting companies’ ability to win markets in areas such as autonomous vehicles, drones and mapping.
native color lidar technical
Native color LiDAR is a light-based 3D sensing system that captures precise distance measurements and true-color imagery together, producing a full-color three-dimensional map rather than a black-and-white scan. For investors it matters because this integrated output reduces the need for separate cameras or time-consuming color-matching, speeds automated analysis for mapping, inspection and autonomous systems, and can improve product accuracy, usefulness and market competitiveness.
physical ai technical
Physical AI combines artificial intelligence with physical devices or environments, enabling machines to interact with and adapt to the real world in a human-like way. It matters to investors because it can lead to smarter robots, autonomous vehicles, or advanced sensors that improve efficiency and open new markets, potentially creating significant business opportunities and competitive advantages.
field foundation models technical
Field foundation models are large artificial intelligence systems trained on broad information and then tailored to a specific industry or discipline, like finance, healthcare, or manufacturing. They act like a Swiss Army knife turned into a single, specialized tool for an industry, improving tasks such as analysis, forecasting, and document review. For investors they matter because these models can lower costs, speed product development, create competitive advantages, and introduce new operational or regulatory risks.
gps-denied environments technical
GPS-denied environments are situations where global positioning signals, like those from satellites, cannot be received or are intentionally blocked. This makes it difficult to determine precise location or navigate using standard GPS technology. For investors, such environments can pose risks for technology-dependent industries, as reliable location data is crucial for many modern applications and services.

Rev8 provides the precision and ruggedness required for production deployments in unstructured settings

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ouster, Inc. (Nasdaq: OUST) (“Ouster” or the “Company”), a leader in sensing and perception for Physical AI, and FieldAI, a leader in field-deployed general robot intelligence, announced today a collaboration to enhance how general-purpose robots perceive and navigate complex environments by leveraging Ouster’s Rev8 native color lidar.

FieldAI’s universal robot “brain" works across radically different robot types, tasks, and environments. Robots can be introduced to a new site like a new employee, with no prior information, pre-planned routes, supporting infrastructure, or environmental modification required. The novel architecture of Field Foundation Models™ unlocks unstructured settings where most of the world's physical work takes place. These environments are otherwise too complex and unpredictable for robots.

"FieldAI is at the forefront of deploying general-purpose robots in unstructured settings where work is often dangerous and difficult for humans," said Cyrille Jacquemet, Chief Revenue Officer at Ouster. “Their new class of foundation models offers the reliability and adaptability required for autonomous robotics deployment at scale. We are thrilled to collaborate on leveraging our new Rev8 digital lidar to power the next generation of industrial autonomy."

FieldAI already utilizes Ouster’s digital lidar to enable robots to navigate complex, unmapped, and GPS-denied environments. As FieldAI expands deployments with large industrial customers, it is looking to Ouster Rev8’s advanced sensing capabilities and robust design to help meet the rigorous demands of safety-critical industries. By integrating these capabilities in its products, FieldAI intends to deliver enhanced safety and interpretability for enterprise customers as it scales its footprint across construction, mining, energy, manufacturing, security, and government.

"Scaling autonomous systems in demanding real-world conditions starts with advanced sensor technology,” said Andrew Mullen, Head of Hardware at FieldAI. “Ouster Rev8’s ruggedness, performance, and native color are helping FieldAI deliver next-generation physical AI solutions for industrial customers where it matters most, in the field.”
