Roblox Launches Real-Time Chat Rephrasing to Maintain Civility and Gameplay Flow
Real-time rephrasing preserves conversation flow as new text filter updates significantly improve violative text detections
Real-Time Chat Rephrasing for Respectful Chat
Every day, millions of people connect and play on Roblox where real-time communication is important for user expression and coordinating gameplay. When users encounter strings of “####” because filters have blocked inappropriate language, chats can be disrupted and hard to follow.
To keep gameplay chat flowing naturally for users, Roblox is leveraging AI to automatically rephrase profanity. Rather than displaying only hashmarks, filtered text will be translated into more respectful language that remains closer to the user’s original intent. For example, a message that violates Roblox’s profanity policies, such as “Hurry TF up!” would previously have appeared as “####” within experience chat. That will now be rephrased to “Hurry up!” This new layer is designed to maintain civility by rephrasing the language and replacing “stop signs” with real-time guidance.
“Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,” said Rajiv Bhatia, Vice President of User and Discovery Product at Roblox. “Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what’s appropriate. This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil.”
When a message violates Roblox’s profanity policy, everyone in the chat is notified that the text has been rephrased to keep things civil. While rephrasing reduces some of the disruption in the chat, Roblox’s multilayered safety system remains in effect for more serious behavior. Rephrasing is available exclusively for in-experience chat between age-checked users in similar age groups and is supported in all languages currently available through Roblox’s automatic translation tools.

Enhancing Chat Filters
Roblox is also making significant improvements to its text filtering system. Roblox is upgrading its text filter to detect more variations of language that breaks its Community Standards. Early results from Roblox’s testing show significant improvements in detecting leet-speak, or letters replaced with numbers or symbols, and more sophisticated attempts to bypass filters. This has allowed Roblox to reduce the prevalence of false negatives for sharing or soliciting personal information, like social handles or phone numbers, by 20x.
No system is perfect, but these advancements represent a major milestone in supporting safe, civil, and fun communication on Roblox. This is the first step on Roblox's long-term path to reducing ##### for a more natural chat experience. The company will continue to learn, iterate, and evolve its tools to help support safe and civil chat, including additional controls for users.
