Stock Market Today Live, October 30: Nasdaq Futures Fall 2% After Intel, Amazon; Most Tech Losers Released Nothing New

A brushed steel ribbon bent into a jagged line that rises and falls, on a pale matte surface with a deep teal background

Nasdaq-100 futures fell 2% early Friday after Intel and Amazon slid on their results, CNBC reported, while Dow futures were flat. At 6:30 a.m. ET, before the open, Intel was 25.39% lower, and the selling reached tech companies with nothing new to say, as 6 of the 9 on StockTitan’s 15 biggest losers had no release or filing.

The short answer. Tech stocks are lower before the open on the last trading day of October. Intel forecast lower sales for this quarter than the last, and Amazon’s results came in under analysts’ estimates, CNBC reported. Drugmakers AstraZeneca and Sanofi rose after reporting results this morning. The SPY fund that tracks the S&P 500, held by many ordinary savers, was down 1.00% at 6:30 a.m. ET. The selling also hit tech companies that had said nothing new, since six of the nine tech companies on the losers’ board put out no release or filing after Thursday’s close.

Intel’s forecast and Amazon’s results push tech stocks lower before the open

The selling this morning is heaviest in tech. Futures tied to the Nasdaq-100 lost 2% and S&P 500 futures 0.9%, with Dow futures flat, CNBC reported at 5:15 a.m. ET. It said the drop came after Amazon and Intel slid on their results. On StockTitan’s real-time data the QQQ fund, which tracks the Nasdaq-100, was down 2.30% at 6:30 a.m. ET in pre-market trading, and pre-market prices can shift once regular trading starts at 9:30 a.m. ET.

The selling reached Europe as well, where CNBC said the Stoxx 600 Technology index fell 1.9% in a global tech rout it tied to the two companies’ disappointing results. Drugmakers went the other way, with AstraZeneca 4.52% higher and Sanofi 3.87% higher at 6:30 a.m. ET after both reported this morning (AstraZeneca results, Sanofi results). Exxon Mobil and Chevron also reported by 6:30 a.m. ET (Exxon Mobil release, StockTitan’s Chevron article).

Why is Intel stock down today?

Intel forecast smaller sales and profit for the fourth quarter than the third, and its finance chief said the slowdown in PC sales would last into next year. That forecast fell short of what analysts expected, CNBC reported, and the stock lost about a quarter of its value before Friday’s open.

Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion, which is less than the $16.5 billion it reported for the third quarter (Intel release).

Intel also expects its gross margin to fall to 38.0% from 44.1%, both on its adjusted basis. Gross margin is the share of sales left after the cost of making the chips.

Analysts had expected $17.1 billion of revenue and adjusted earnings of 43 cents a share, a measure that leaves out some one-time costs, according to the consensus compiled by LSEG. Intel’s own forecast on that basis is 25 cents a share.

The weak spot is the PC business. Revenue from Intel’s client computing group, which sells the chips inside laptops and desktops, fell 5% from a year earlier, while data center and AI revenue rose 78%. Chief financial officer David Zinsner said in the release, “Looking ahead, we see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year,” so Intel itself expects weak PC demand to last into mid-2027. StockTitan’s article on Intel’s quarter covers the results in full.

Why are chip stocks down today?

The ten chip stocks in the chart below, the six on StockTitan’s losers’ board plus Micron, Qualcomm, Broadcom and Nvidia, all fell before the open. Only Intel and Sandisk among them had reported results since Thursday’s close. CNBC tied the worldwide fall in tech shares to the results of Amazon and Intel.

Chip stocks before the open, change at 6:30 a.m. ET. Intel fell the most by far after its forecast, and every other chip company in the chart fell too, though only Sandisk among them had reported since Thursday's close.

ASE Technology-7.97%
Sandisk-7.80%
Micron-4.86%
Qualcomm-4.53%
Broadcom-3.69%
Nvidia-2.74%

Arm was down 8.86% and AMD 8.11% at 6:30 a.m. ET in pre-market trading, and Micron, Qualcomm, Broadcom and Nvidia were lower by smaller amounts. None of these six had published a release or an SEC filing since Thursday’s 4:00 p.m. ET close, according to StockTitan’s news and filings data. Neither had ASE Technology, which packages and tests chips for other companies. Aehr Test Systems filed an 8-K, the form for major company events, naming a new director, and a Form 4, the form for insider share trades, but no results.

The fall was not only American. CNBC reported that the chip equipment makers Tokyo Electron and Advantest dropped in Tokyo, where the Nikkei 225 closed 2.12% lower.

Sandisk is the only other company in the chart that reported results after Thursday’s close. It reported on Thursday that revenue rose 23% from the previous quarter and announced an eight-for-one stock split (Sandisk release). The stock was still 7.80% lower at 6:30 a.m. ET. StockTitan’s Sandisk article has the details.

Other tech hardware fell as well. Dell, which sells PCs and servers, was 9.74% lower at 6:30 a.m. ET, and Coherent and Applied Optoelectronics, which make optical parts for data networks, were down 8.10% and 8.08%. None of the three had a release or filing since Thursday’s close. Our reading of the board is that the morning’s tech selling reached well past the two companies that reported, to companies that had told investors nothing new.

Why is Amazon stock down today?

Amazon’s earnings and sales came in just under analysts’ estimates, CNBC reported. The outlet also noted that Amazon posted negative free cash flow. Amazon said its cloud business grew at its fastest pace in nearly five years.

Amazon was 6.56% lower at 6:30 a.m. ET in pre-market trading. Its third-quarter net sales rose 12% to $201.9 billion, and AWS, its cloud computing arm, grew 39% (Amazon release).

Over the twelve months to September, free cash flow was an outflow of $42.4 billion, meaning Amazon spent more on buildings and equipment than its business brought in. Amazon said the jump in that spending mainly reflects investments in artificial intelligence.

Amazon earned $1.89 a share, below the $1.96 analysts polled by LSEG had expected, and its sales were slightly under their estimate too, CNBC reported. StockTitan’s Amazon results article looks at the cloud business in depth.
